Former copy editor, former instructor, former actor, still a darn good cook. Used to think I was a centrist until the country veered wayyy right. That was 40+ years ago.
My little town of Saugerties, NY, had a decent showing at #NoKings — about 500 good demonstrators and half a dozen friendly cops. Nearly everyone who drove by honked in support.
One quite elderly white haired lady gave us the finger, which I also count as success.

Proud to call this persistent feminist my friend

(@pattylyons.bsky.social — reposting for you)
You know you have fascismed too close to the sun when the NYPD won't even help.

The gang that couldn’t shoot straight strikes again. It’d be funny if it weren’t so damn serious. Un-f’ing-believable www.nytimes.com/2025/04/18/b...

Well damn. Who knew China was #1 in burns?
China really upping their trolling game since the tariffs.

This is a classic Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight story. Unbelievable (except: entirely believable today). This is what happens when the boss has a new whim: www.nytimes.com/2025/03/20/u...

Too good not to share.
An important announcement from the Governor of Illinois.

The annoying toddler now in the White House has, according to the NYT, dismissed the board of the Kennedy Center and plans to install himself as board chair.
The Kennedy Center.
This is just absurd insanity.

There’s a lot to be outraged and frustrated and upset about — every damn day. I’m taking a minute to breathe and recoup. Here are some winter woods so you can too.

I just contacted my senators and urged them to oppose Pete Hegseth's nomination to lead the Defense Department. Trump's pick would undermine our national security. app.sosha.ai/s/h5sIRDB2

Thought I'd be able to tolerate Mr. 34 felonies, but hearing 7 or 8 minutes of his smug, petty, idiotic words, I figure that although I'll stay abreast of what happens, I won't listen to anything directly from the horse's ass's mouth
We all need to keep up our energy and focus for genuine resistance

I’m staying at a hotel for a few days and—of course—Fox News is on the TV near the hotel bar. The chyron (text at bottom) says “Trump at record approval rates.”
538 begs to differ… unless Fox means record low?

Read Ross "Yeah, I'm an asshat; it doesn't rhyme with" Douthat's column, "O Canada, Come Join Us." I won't link it here because I can't encourage anyone else to read that kind of...let's call it poppycock.
It's cheap clickbait, brainless pap, or crappy journalism. Or all three. Shame, @nytimes.com

Except for this post and keeping up with friends in and around LA, I'll forgo social media to watch Jimmy Carter's funeral.
The moving eulogies by Ford's son, Mondale's son, Stu Eizentat, and Jason Carter can teach us more about living than social media can give us in a month or a year.

Outrageous! This needs to blow up. They want to throw out 60,000 votes and steal the state Supreme Court election in NC!

One part reminds me of @chrislhayes.bsky.social recent WITHpod with Anna Galland: Hayes quoted organizers during Bolsonaro's regime who were determined to maintain alliances and stand up for — and not abandon — others. They said "no one lets go of anyone's hand."
This is the end of a long thread. I highly recommend reading the whole thing and spreading it wide.
Fascists want us to despair, so we should do things that decrease despair. Fascists want us divided, so we should embrace solidarity.

When those with most power to defend fascists' targets instead abandon them, we increase despair and decrease solidarity.

It's immoral. It also seem like bad math.
