I did not and I just waltzed in. There was a line but it was fast and weirdly friendly

Even more than that we're a nation of debtors and deflation helps those holding the debt immensely. They're salivating at impending debt servitude.

I was working an entire essay on this very notion this summer and this is reminding me I should pick it back up. TL;DR - every price is someone else's income and whether prices going down on something is "good" depends a whole lot on what you do for a living.

ANDREESSEN: Even if AI ends up destroying all the jobs, “the result would be hyper-deflation of prices, which is the thing that people miss. .. Things that today cost a lot of money will all of a sudden be cheap or free.”

Every time I fly internationally out of RDU I show up 3ish hours early per recommendations and breeze through in 15 minutes. Then I say im not doing that next time, forget, and repeat.

Nick Clegg wants another chance, really?
This daylight robbery is now so fucking hateful
It's completely accepted by the vast majority

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Him and Diana Ross at Bobby Darin's house in 66, dancing. Guarantee you he loved disco.

I'm pals with a cheerfully cranky rhetoric professor here in town, nearing retirement, and she was like "oh yeah a whole generation of scholars just disappeared in 1987!" And I was like this isn't precisely making me feel better.

Janet Mills is 77, turning 78 at the end of this year. If she won in 2026, her first term in the Senate would end when she's 85 years old.

"Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has lobbied Mills to run for months..."

Am I gearing up to pitch and co-edit a special journal issue with a bunch of luminaries in its pages? Sure. Why not?

Going mad is a good thing to me

I like to keep abreast and gave it a listen over the weekend. Like you, it's never been for me. Also it is actually capital B Bad. Worse, the most terrible lines and hooks lodged into my brain and it's annoying.

I am looking at the rough averages tho (2 conferences a year, 1 top thingy every 2 years, 1 article per two years) and thinking I might be crazy.

The net professional outcome was one zoom interview for a nearly immediately canceled line at a uni whose admin went bonkers last spring/summer.

but probably isn't the most legible to a committee wanting another person for the disinfo beat. And that's ok, I made my bed there.

I do get invited to talks.

I think the project I'm winding through (miniatures production is "just" silly game stuff but also deeply complicates received binaries of craft/industry, is deeply implicated in tech like 3D printing, and is a vector for the British in particular to navigate their history) gets me invited to talks

I'm in a good mood! I'm not sad at the moment. Just not really sure what more I could be doing. I'm not sure if it's possible for me to do more (I guess it's always possible).

Decided to look at my CV at the 6.5 year grad/adjunct mark:

1 book in review
4 articles
1 book chapter
12 conferences
4 top paper/panels
5 separate classes instructor of record
10 as TA
11k in grants/fellowships
PhD in hand

Still seems like I can't get a sniff at a steady permanent position

Karin Dreijer is up there in greatest living vocalist category for me. Not technically best, not best range, greatest at emoting, transporting, communicating.
