Hi New Followers 👋

You've made a wise choice. 👍

As well as posting silliness and hope for a better world I also write books (full of silliness and hope for a better world). Start with this free book of shorts written to introduce you to the #steampunk world of Hammersmyth.

mybook.to/hammersmyth2
Book Cover for The Hammersmith Tales (spelt with a y instead of an i). A beige background with shadowy images of cogs and clock faces. In the bottom right corner sits a grey cat wearing brass goggles and a green scarf. H elooks out at us with a lopsided grin. His tail is segmented with metal joints and his eyes have mechanical irises. The book's title is across the top in red and gold. Written in white below it says "A collection of steampunk shorts from the author of", then in yellow/gold "Dexter & Sinister Detecting Agents." Below that is the author's name in white, Keith W Dickinson.

I've never seen that work TBH, but reposting my saved post is probably a good idea. 👍

I won't be replying to everyone as I just straight up can't keep up.

Oh boy. A post has escaped containment. The notifications are... a lot.
Screenshot showing interaction on a post. 1.3k reposts. 27 quotes. 3.2k likes. 39 saves. A bell icon showing thirty plus notifications. This is a wild underestimation.

The feeling remains. I may have to stay off social media for a while. And by a while I mean five minutes probably. I'm too sick for impulse control.

V. excited to have found a child's diary from 1789, covering the period he & his family fled the French Revolution

... So far it has mostly been 'I am very annoyed about running away!', accompanied with detailed blow by blow accounts of his tutor's unfortunate bouts of diarrhoea #18c

A cool charity in Hoxton that teaches & gives disadvantaged kids skills in filmmaking has asked me a question:

Any female animators want to take part in a mentorship programme they run?

They've been doing good work for 25+ years.

I'm sick, I'm tired, I'm frustrated, I'm angry, and I'm a little bit sad. I don't think anything will be getting done today.

Apparently arts degrees are so worthless they need to be stopped, yet the product of those degrees is so valuable paying for it would bring down an entire industry.

Make it make sense.
Headline screenshot. The leader of the Conservative Party saying we need to "Curb students taking 'rip-off' degrees such as English." Headline screenshot. The former leader of the Liberal Democrats, also former Meta employee, claiming that asking artists for permission to use their work (i.e. paying for it) would "kill" the A.I. industry.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

And one of the industries which, relying entirely on freelance workers, but requiring public audience spaces, was fucked over completely by the pandemic, without mercy or assistance, but survived, on its knees so it can now get another kick in the teeth from these soulless twats.
coreybrotherson.bsky.social
Hey kids!

Remember when the pandemic struck and eventually the (Tory) government told everyone to stay at home, and the arts and entertainment industries were one of the few things keeping everyone from pulling our own eyes out of our skulls from abject fear and boredom?

Remember that?

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.
keithwdickinson.bsky.social
Exactly. How many Pratchetts, Denches, or Lennons have we lost because they were too busy working nights stacking shelves in Tesco.

Alt text: Two images. 1. A headline. The leader of the Conservative party saying, "We need to curb students taking rip off degrees such as English." 2. A bar of chocolate they gave away at the Tory Party conference that says, "When Labour negotiates Britain loses." Britain is spelt B-R-I-T-I-A-N.

The people in charge of the media went to the same private schools as the people in government. They think it's their birthright to tell us what to do.
keithwdickinson.bsky.social
As soon as the government stopped paying for higher education they gave up their right to tell us what to do. They effectively privatised education. If I'm paying out of my own pocket I'll study whatever the fuck I want. It is no longer any of their business.
keithwdickinson.bsky.social
There are more of us than there are of them. They seem to forget that too.
keithwdickinson.bsky.social
The purpose of education is education, not to produce an effective workforce. The people don't work for the government, the government works for us. We are not employees of the state, its underlings, we are its masters. The privately educated few seem to forget that.
