He has no understanding of the true source of American power. Yes, there was always “hard power”. But what actually made America great was its soft power. The idea of a democratic world. The ability to attract friends & allies who shared that ideal. He has no clue.

As an example, I belong to a professional organization where the lawyers agree that none should advance arguments on behalf of a client that would damage the rights of the community as a whole

(adjunct prof here) In the civil law context, I do believe that the lawyer's morals must shape the arguments (and acceptance of the client). Criminal law is different - it is holding the state accountable.

Seems to me trump ended the friendship because the abuse was documented : he had no choice but to cut ties once it was on paper
