Cases like this are why the death penalty should be entirely abolished. If the state can't play by it's own rules, it just flatly should not have the authority to take life. And the state seemingly *never* plays by the rules in capital cases.

It shouldn't be done at all, but if we're going to empower the state to take a life the absolute least they owe us is full transparency when they do.
