PSA: I remain on the other side of the planet and will not be able to watch Hawks-Rockets live tonight or podcast as I normally would after it.

There will be a 2-part Locked On Hawks podcast published late tonight.

Back to normal (I hope) in about a week!

two pieces of context to consider when evaluating the hawks preseason opener…

1) houston is a very distinctive opponent with huge strengths and a lot of unconventional lineup stuff

2) it’s a preseason game in which no one played more than 20 minutes

i'm not married and i'm not in rome

but

this is definitely the vibe as i try to watch the hawks from across the world on terrible internet in the middle of the night

Also of note:

- Starting lineups don’t matter nearly as much as they are discussed

- The Hawks basically have 7 starters

- Okongwu will be able to play plenty since he can play next to Porzingis AND it’s reasonable to project Porzingis to miss time

FWIW this was the lineup I projected as most likely leading up to training camp.

Quin Snyder is basically never eager to discuss starting lineup decisions, so preseason games are at least datapoints to file away.

Tonight the Hawks will start:

Trae Young
Dyson Daniels
Zaccharie Risacher
Jalen Johnson
Kristaps Porzingis

I can’t remember who asked me about this, but this is the coaching staff list the Hawks are using for the 2025-26 season.

Quin Snyder was discussing the evolution of the offense and Trae playing some off the ball. He cited two stats:

— defenses are picking Trae up six feet further up the court compared to four years ago

— Trae is being guarded by defenders 4 to 5 inches taller than four years ago

I saw that someone already replied with this, but I have heard for 30+ years from my dad that Kareem is the GOAT.

So I bang the drum alongside you that he should not be ignored in the conversation.

His resume is preposterous.

Trae Young on the healthy Hawks after the first training camp practice:

"The vibes are really high. The best part is we're all on the court. I don't look in the training room and see anybody out there in the training room right now."

The Hawks open training camp today.

First session scheduled to begin at 10 am ET.

If you missed it, they are having camp at the practice facility in Brookhaven this season.

lol didn't get anything new there

training camp roster still has risacher at 6'9, for example

Not sure if I posted this earlier, but Porzingis referred to Trae Young as "the best passer in the league."

Kristaps Porzingis said it was a “tough couple of days with flights” and he actually arrived in Atlanta this morning.

He just met a lot of guys on the team in the last couple of hours.

(Yes, there will still be a Locked On Hawks Podcast tonight, but I can't jam 4 hours worth of stuff into it!)

Dyson Daniels opened an answer to a question about ATL's backup point guard situation by saying "Basketball is so positionless."

Yep!

(He also did not shy away from being able to play point guard when called upon and his experience doing it)

This

And another place cut up the video to eliminate all context

there's been some (very) bad aggregation of what Trae Young said today

might worth watching the full question and answer

Trae Young responds to Caleb Johnson’s question about not getting a contract extension done to this point:
