I will be testing it further tonight now that the sun has gone down. So far I have only used it indoors.

Holy shit I don't spend that in a YEAR! Also glad not in USA.

Only 45 lumens from the source, and it's angled downward so the projector itself is barely visible - just the arc. The 80 lumen tail light mounted on my fender still visible and doesn't wash out the arc.

Rigged up this quick proof of concept.

Looks great. Power source at this time is two 9V batteries taped together 😂.

YEs definitely. $35.00 CAD each.

After reading your post, I tried putting one on the back of my bike. Looks good! Casts a bright arc around the back of the bike that would do wonders for visibility. Looks particularly good against the white snow.

Forklift arc lights are a red-hot item lately. Sold dozens of them.

I'm saving so much on fuel and insurance, I could buy a brand new $3500 ebike every 4 months.

I thought about upgrading from the Libre 2 to the Libre 3. I'm very glad that I didn't. Bullet dodged.

Bike paths allow independent travel that doesn't rely on timetables or hubs, and cost nothing to operate.

Better transit supporting bikes as last-mile would be even better than one or the other.

I wonder if there is a battery chemistry that is more tolerant of extreme cold.
December 4, 2025 at 5:47 PM
Believe it or not the internal resistance of the battery during discharge does provide some heat. Maybe that's why my batteries aren't toast yet.

Last year I tried an electric sock on the battery with a cloth wrap around it. Significantly improved range.

I always warm the battery up to room temperature before charging.

As for discharging, this is the 3rd winter for this particular battery, and I've been riding ebikes in through the winter since 2019. So far battery damage from discharging in the cold is negligible.

How do they boil water then? Pot on the stove? Cup in the microwave?

Getting people out of their cars should be Toronto's #1 priority.

Looks cool, but nobody would see it because most of my scarf is under my jacket / collar.

And all this time I've been defining them based upon their legal definition as it applies to road use, as opposed to the most pedantic definition possible as derived from etymology.

If I seem aggravated it's because I tire of the non-stop attacks against my primary form of transportation.

Ebikes and electric motorcycles are not the same thing, and anyone with even a passing familiarity with either would know that.

But do go off.
December 3, 2025 at 7:05 PM
If it goes 50mph, it's not an ebike - it's a motorcycle.

A 3000W Sur Ron is not the same kind of vehicle as a 250W Specialized Turbo Vado. One is a motorcycle, and one is an ebike.

For the briefest of moments I thought you had a VFD-style display on your ebike (which would have been delightfully retro).
