Adult growth in the Drosophila ejaculatory duct is driven by an evolutionarily conserved Juvenile Hormone–endocycle–protein synthesis axis essential for male fertility

A model for ED organ growth and protein synthesis driven by endoreplication induced by JH signaling. Juvenile hormone signaling (Gce/Met/Tai) induces endoreplication, which induces protein synthesis and ED growth and development, which induce fertility.

Proposed cut to NSF Biology budget is 70%.

70%. Seventy.

Call your senators & reps nonstop. Give them numbers on NSF impact for state/district. tableau.external.nsf.gov/views/NSFbyN... explain this will decimate the economy if their districts, especially if it has a major research univ. 🧪

Pleased to share and amplify our most recent paper. Looking at #oncogene effects in the #drosophila #prostate which is #postmitotic and #polyploid. 🧪

The fruitfly prostate-like accessory gland is a postmitotic and polyploid tissue. S. Jaimian Church, @buttittalab.bsky.social & co show similarities between the oncogenic activity in the Drosophila accessory gland and in polyploid prostate cancer. doi.org/10.1242/dmm....
#prostatecancer #cancer
Oncogenic activation leads to endocycling and tissue hypertrophy in the adult Drosophila accessory gland. (A) Diagram showing the major features of the Drosophila accessory gland. (B) DIC images of accessory glands with ejaculatory ducts exhibiting basal protrusions when YkiWT+P35 is expressed in adults. (C) Optical cross-sections of glands expressing the indicated transgenes for 10 days. (D) Optical coronal section through glands and ejaculatory duct expressing Myc+E2f/Dp+P35 exhibiting apical hypertrophy invading the lumen and a basal protrusion. (E) Split bar plot showing the frequency of accessory glands with apical or basal protrusions at various time points. d, day. (F) EdU labeling of flies from 6 to 10 days with transgene induction 24-48 h post eclosion. (G) DAPI integrated density measurements (DAPI intensity) after 10 days of transgene expression. (H) Flow cytometry measurements of ploidy from isolated nuclei at 10 days.
