(if its something like jazz and the lowest notes are a clean/woody pluck rather than metallic strum or something through an amp, you're likely hearing acoustic bass. which is not a guitar and in fact the same instrument as the biggest member of the orchestral strings, being plucked instead of bowed)

the easiest way to tell is the instrument's role. bass usually plays the lowest notes. if it's melody/chords and another instrument's playing lower notes, ur likely hearing guitar. if it's melodic but not going very high, likely a bass solo
if it sounds like a wall of guitar, its prob both in unison

i thought this was going to end with some combination of violin/viola/cello because that's the group that is typically called "the strings" haha

like, the main characters mostly talk and react like people these days, rather than just vehicles for exposition, and you can tell the localizers have a lot of fun with random NPCs sprinkling jokes there for people who have been playing pokemon for decades. i'd bet the writers want voice acting too

from what i've seen watching a friend (and from playing scarlet and the dlc) the character writing is a lot more charming now too so its such a shame that cutscene moments like this take the player out of any immersion they might have had
