This longing for “home” in Guangdong and Southern China is likely a sentiment every generation of my family has experienced at some point, whether it was 中山, 珠海 or 香港 when they left home. It’s an uncanny feeling to meet strangers who know the songs from your distant past or even current thoughts.

I point out their appearance as they are unexpected Chinese speakers. We spoke about his son’s worries about forgetting Chinese & how hard it was for him to fit in, in Toronto. How he misses his mom in sister back home. My ancestral village is also in Guangdong.

A few days ago a black father and son sat beside my family in a restaurant. After overhearing their conversation for a while I realized they were speaking Cantonese and talking about living in China. I finally asked them if they were from Guangdong, and they were. It was a joy to connect.

Does anyone know if there is a way to post from IG to BlueSky?

Otherwise, please feel free to find me on IG @bx_writenow where I primarily post.

The legendary poet and activist Nellie Wong celebrates her 90th (!) birthday with a new collection, Nothing Like Freedom. I was deeply honored to be asked to write a foreword for this selection of work from an icon of Asian American poetry.

I love this character as it’s part of my first-born’s name. Same Chinese character origin / meaning and pronunciation in Korean. (They are half Korean)

What are your thoughts on the em dash? — the long dash— If I could use it all the time — I would — (I write prose not poetry). But it looks a bit dramatic, doesn't it? Is there a proper way to use it? I also quite like using slashes instead of and/or. Any fave punctuations?

I co-founded @asiancha.bsky.social in 2007, ten years after the Handover. This is the very first time I'm entrusting a part of the journal completely to another person. (Can you believe it?!) We have a new Poetry Editor: Eric Yip @metapheric.bsky.social
