I’m a disability attorney and guy who does writing stuff in Portland, OR. I love horror movies because they tell the truth. Opinions not endorsed by employer.
If you asked me six months ago would I get more out of an IT (2017) prequel or xenomorphs finally on planet earth, I’d have been so fucking wrong.

Man, WELCOME TO DERRY just ate all of STRANGER THINGS’s lunch.

One take I see a lot is that Billy Joel accidentally wrote gay characters into “Piano Man.” Like, Paul the real estate novelist is obvi hooking up with Davy who’s still in the Navy. That’s not subtext; it’s plain text. I don’t particularly like Billy Joel, but guy knew what he was doing.

The year 2000. End of spring break. On a bored whim, friends & I saw TITAN AE in a near-empty theater with only one other group of dudes. Movie was ok, but everyone riffed off each other’s jokes, and it was a delirious fun hang. Two of my friends aren’t alive anymore.

Cue the end of STAND BY ME.
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

Since it just snagged a Golden Globe nomination, I’m gonna officialize my stance that “Golden” is barely the third best song on KPOP DEMON HUNTERS, the fuck is everybody on?

Obviously John Waters doesn’t need my approval, but…did he see THE MONKEY?
John Waters has named FINAL DESTINATION BLOODLINES one of the best movies of 2025.

“The best sequel to the coolest cinematic franchise ever,” said Waters. “Ferocious, fractured & filled with so many scary, twisted surprises — this picture goes beyond trash into a new realm of exploitation art.”
‘Final Destination Bloodlines’ Is John Waters’ Favorite Horror Film of 2025: “A New Realm of Exploitation Art”
Cult icon John Waters published his annual list of the year’s best films via Vulture, and an unlikely horror sequel ranked near the top. Final Destination Bloodlines is the Pope of Trash’s second favo...

Just remembered that Netflix owns fucking Superman.

My favorite thing about STRANGER THINGS 5 is that the Chicago episode of season 2 is fully canon now.

Irrationally pissed that STRANGER THINGS 5 talks about the sorcerer class in D&D, which didn’t come out until 3rd edition in the fucking year 2000.

Contrariwise.
Let’s all go around the table and say one word we’re thankful for.

Listened to a lot of THE BUFFALO HUNTER HUNTER audiobook today. You know what, that story is seasonally appropriate.

Just show the STRANGER THINGS “kids” chainsmoking. It’d be appropriate to the time and explain why they look so old in 11th grade.

And there I was, hoping that DGG’s total artistic & commercial faceplant with EXORCIST: BELIEVER would kill the franchise until next decade.
Scarlett Johansson will star in Mike Flanagan's new 'Exorcist' movie

My 4-year-old girl has hipped me to the most nuanced and character-driven show about teen superheroes since YOUNG JUSTICE. I am not kidding about this.

There’s a recurring type of YouTuber who makes videos on an algorithm-friendly schedule and is married to their Patreon, but they still make a point to say how much they’ve been happy to “stop using social media.”

Let’s keep aggressively blocking shitposters. It’s working.
I feel like I’d login to this app more often than once every like two or three days if there was even 15% more shitposting. Hell I’d settle for 10%. #bringbackshitposting

That was the exact year I got into postpunk bands like WIRE and PIL, so this point is well made.

No artist paid for my therapy or taught me how to meditate, but My Chemical Romance helped me get through a lot.

Some might say that the auditory output of Japanese harsh noise legend Merzbow is low-effort. I don’t agree, but I won’t defend him as long as he’s using AI slop cover art.

As an attorney, I’ve never dunked on Kim K’s highly public attempts to join the most demanding state bar in the nation. It’s always cool to better yourself, and her work with death row inmates is straight fire awesome.

But yeah…. I won’t even try to cape for her this time.

For a while there, anybody reposting Twitter was an auto-blockworthy offense to me. I’m not quite there again, but I grow ever more tired of all the new Tweet dunks I keep seeing.

PARADISE LOST. Ever since, I’m always looking for my next hit of “actually, the devil is the hero of this story.”
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"
