Some of our participants from the hackathon last month sat down to chat with our friends at @portershed.bsky.social about the project and their work during the hack - keep your eyes peeled for the footage!

But how better to start than to learn more about STEMMA from @erinannmcc.bsky.social herself?

This is what I look like when I code, so I figured it was the most accurate representation of the hackathon

If that's about Tommy C's son I will be devastated
caitlinburge.bsky.social
Potentially! I was thinking that or Winnington - the problem is the Bulkeley family seem to have dispersed/married into families all over the two counties, and then had children with all the same names, so tracking down who was where when (if records exist!) is becoming a real rabbit hole...

Thank you both, you are saints! That's definitely it - was one of those where I was just staring at it for so long it wasn't making sense 😂

Going mad with a bit of palaeography here - any help from the hive mind?
Unsure on the third and last words - State Paper Calendar Summary says last is 'Wymyngam' but I'm expecting this to be somewhere either in Cheshire or Anglesey and can't find anything? Help please! #earlymodern #transcription

Apparently we now get personalised coke cans at the hackathon too? @erinannmcc.bsky.social #STEMMAhackathon

I’m sorry but if your students use AI to write papers and you use AI to grade them zero school is happening. You are running together on a hamster wheel
rezekjoe.bsky.social
Why even have a brain, any ideas, any ability to express them, any kind of communication with other people, any desire to solve problems or invent anything, any reason to learn, any use for your eyes or your heart, or any reason to teach or create
From NYT article about the increasing use of AI in the classroom: “Writing is one of the most challenging tasks for students, which is why it is so tempting for some to ask A.I. to do it for them. In turn, A.I. can be useful for teachers who would like to assign more writing, but are limited in their time to grade it.”

If nothing else, Dracula captures the point in a career when the shine really starts to come off travelling for work.

the best thing about Bram Stoker's Dracula is that it starts with the narrator being like 'i am going to Count Dracula's house. his name is Count Dracula. he's probably just a guy.'

Reality imitates meme.

(This is superb reporting, making visible the consequences of a failing funding model.)

Gru Has A Plan Meme.
Gru is explaining his plan very excitedly with a whiteboard. On the first white board, he has written "we target international students to get their money." Second whiteboard: "we use their money to build shiny buildings." Third whiteboard: "International students stop coming because humans aren't an infinite resources and international relations are volatile. Empty buildings need to be paid off." In the fourth panel he looks in consternation and realitsation at the text.

Have you really spent the last four days in archives if you don't have over 1,000 photos to go through after the fact? Looking forward to some quality transcribing time... #earlymodern

Ended up down a rabbit hole on a piece I'm writing about abbesses (Lady Katherine Bulkeley in particular) and Cromwell and discovered a novel about said abbess fighting crime and hunting killers in 16C Liverpool and honestly this is just one of those days where I couldn't love my job more

Please expect 'ridiculogram' to appear in every network analysis talk / paper I do from now on
stemma.bsky.social
"TL;DR — Network visualization is often done in the wrong way: first a network layout is produced using a heuristic, and then follow-up analyses are performed and evaluated according to the layout...."

Also introduced me to the very useful term "ridiculogram."

Every major UK newspaper - left, right, broadsheet, tabloid - is running a front page campaign against copyright carveouts for AI training.

I can't remember the last time any political cause had such broad support, let alone one so anti-big tech and so economically consequential.
Newspaper stand with newspapers all carrying the front page Campaign 'make it fAIr'
