It's true... I’ve been honored to run the Hive for the last several years, working with some of the best in the business. I'm immensely proud of the work we did through two presidential elections and a pandemic, and amid the persistent news cycle churn—will be rooting for the VF team going forward.

For the first time since she was freed from an immigration prison, Rümeysa Öztürk speaks. And she does so by ... writing:

"Writing is the heart of freedom of expression. Unbelievably, this single opinion piece, published in our student newspaper, would lead to my arrest and detention."
“Even God Cannot Hear Us Here”: What I Witnessed Inside an ICE Women’s Prison
Tufts University doctoral student Rümeysa Öztürk opens up about her 45 days in a South Louisiana processing facility—and the generous and compassionate women she met.

Here’s my takedown of the Supreme Court’s birthright citizenship non-ruling:

Amy Coney Barrett takes balkanized, neo-Confederate approach where you’re only protected in areas where states or individual plaintiffs can sue—and nowhere else.

No way to run a railroad, let alone a nation of laws.
On Birthright Citizenship, the Supreme Court Gives Trump a Blunt Tool to Hammer Judges
The president applauded the conservative majority’s 6-3 ruling limiting nationwide injunctions to stop executive orders, a move sure to sow chaos and open the door to unchecked lawlessness. As Justice...

Make no mistake:

In all but nullifying nationwide, “universal” injunctions in these cases, where a uniform rule of law for birthright citizenship is gravely needed, the Supreme Court chose chaos.

Yes, the right still exists. But a lot of needless confusion, fear, and litigation lie ahead.

Justice Barrett writes for the right-wing supermajority reining in nationwide injunctions and letting Trump unconstitutionally end birthright citizenship in areas of the country where judges have not yet blocked Trump's citizenship-stripping executive order. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...

In an exclusive interview with VF, Wall Street tech analyst Dan Ives talks Musk’s return to Tesla, the AI boom, and the market impact of the Israel-Iran conflict: “The market has gotten used to chaos and uncertainty.”
“Bullish for Tech”: Wall Street’s Most Tireless Optimist Isn’t Rattled by Trump, Musk, or Conflict in Iran
As Trump bombs Iran and Musk melts down, Dan Ives says the future looks bright—for tech stocks, anyway.

On Thursday, the LA Dodgers issued a statement on social media saying that ICE agents had “requested permission to access the parking lots” at Dodger Stadium, but “were denied entry to the grounds by the organization.”
The Dodgers Are Thrust Into Trump’s LA Immigration Crackdown
While Kike Hernández, for one, expressed anger over his community being “ripped apart,” the team’s silence in recent weeks invited scrutiny. But the appearance Thursday of federal agents, and proteste...

What is Curtis Yarvin planning for the US Pavilion at the 2026 Venice Biennale? Hint: It’s not a retrospective of Jon McNaughton’s portraits of bloody, triumphant, muscly Trump. It’s somehow crazier.

If you're not placing today's ruling against gender-affirming care for trans youth in the context of John Roberts' lifelong campaign to suck the life out of the Fourteenth Amendment, and equality for actual humans more broadly, you're doing it wrong.

Here, for @vanityfair.com, I attempt to do that.
The Supreme Court That Ended the Fundamental Right to an Abortion Won’t Protect Trans Youth From Discrimination
Much like in Dobbs, the conservative supermajority has created a nation where kids with gender dysphoria, and their families, will be treated unequally depending on where they live.

A light read from me on this dreary June day:

For the next issue of @vanityfair.com, I have a deeper exploration of all the ways John Roberts helped create the anti-constitutional monster that has been devouring Washington since January.

Necessarily, the story begins with Citizens United.
How John Roberts Created the Anti-constitutional Monster Devouring Washington
From ushering in Citizens United to granting presidents broad immunity, no one in the capital is more responsible for Donald Trump’s destructive second term than the Supreme Court’s chief justice.
