Also re: light diffusion, this sort of thing is too clever by half. Even if reflections worked this way, why would that be clearer than Zuck’s eye, closer to the “camera.”
Circled part of the AI image of Dogs Playing Poker/Tech CEOs Standing Looking at Nothing in Particular. The bright red and yellow streaks on the Deathtrap’s windshield are, notionally, meant to be reflections of the sports cars parked on the other side of the lot, appearing diagonally from them. This sort of thing would a) not be visible from our viewpoint, b) not be as brilliantly vivid as they appear here, and c) would only work under light conditions not possible if the image’s information - a few bright streetlights spaced far on the corners and randomly in between one row of cars. The image cuts off from where there might be more streetlights but the shadows we see on the ground make no sense, the color of the outfits do not match and have an uncanny sharpness relative to their place under the light - largely due to the unrealistic dimensions of the models supposedly conversing in a closed circle in between a parking spot. If those people were real they would be about 4’10” and alarmingly slim. Such a detail is meant to dazzle and confuse the viewer; notice also the bunching of clothing, the distressed pavement and parking lines, the texture in the haircuts. All appear in a reasonable facsimile here. But just as often, these little details defy physics with the actual information we can see in the image. Anyway, the reflection leaps over the border of the windshield. You can see it color “outside the lines.” I agree that “knowing how the science of light works” should not be a prerequisite for being on the internet, and forming opinions based on evidence, but here we are. We should do something about it.

This image is mildly upsetting to describe. A sixteen year old Olivia Nuzzi had a brief phase as a mid ought pop singer under the name Livvy. She had a MySpace page, of which this image is a screenshot (via wayback machine). A banner overtop of the main image shows a brunette, smokey eyed Livvy leaning back to look at us, between the words LIVVY (livvy!) and MYSPACE (just wait til you hear the SENSATION). Below is the main image, taking up most of the screen w similar dimensions to a CD cover. Okay. The background is white. The image is bracketed with a horizontal pink border. Vertical lines spread across the image, like a prison cell. Center right is Livvy, har, har. She is dressed well in leather pants, open toe high heels, a white knitted floral overtop and a not-very-risqué black push-up bra. Her brown hair flows almost to her elbows and she hangs her hands at her sides. Nothing is interesting about the right hand. The left hand, however, is chained to one of the vertical bars of the image (and is, oddly, making a cardinal OK gesture - the same one that would much later be hijacked by white nationalists, but this is c. 2006-8). Going further left, we are now obliged to report that the apparent single cover art’s text appears. At about a 15 degree angle, the name LIVVY is printed in pink. In much bigger yellow font is the name of the song/ep: JAILBAIT.

I read this too fast and thought “what does the famous Roland Space Echo unit have to do with Twitter?”

(It’s a portable tape delay unit from the seventies - you plug your instrument in and the tape records and replays simultaneously with the output. Think Dub Reggae.)
Vintage RE-201 Space Echo with the chassis off to reveal the tape delay system. Popular with Pink Floyd and other contemporary guitarists, it creates delay or “space echo”when activated. (It does this by recording the instrument’s output onto a short length of tape with one recording tapehead - think the stylus on a record player- then repeats on one or several playback tapeheads milliseconds later. Those subsequent heads are mixed in with the instrument’s signal to create a reverberating effect.) This form of delay/echo was a mainstay in recording studios (think rockabilly guitarists, Elvis’ early vocals, etc) but impractical to use in concert until the RE-201. Durable, relatively compact, and with far more features than even many studio-grade units thanks to its transistor preamp, the device caught on like wildfire until smaller and even more portable and versatile digital delays became available in the early-mid eighties. It then fell into disuse until the familiar pattern of nostalgia and vintage rediscovery in the nineties. Examples of its use can be found on OK Computer (“Subterranean Homesick Blues,” “Let Down,” “Climbing Up the Walls,” “Lucky,” etc) and Dark Side of the Moon (“Time” guitar solo) and Lee “Scratch” Perry dub mixes (choose one) among many others. This IS the short version.

Both are in awe of the flight of a CCCP space rocket (helpfully painted red and labeled on the shell) as it flies out beyond the horizon: the young man in a wide smile, the elder with a quieter but satisfied look that doesn’t show his teeth. On the poster the artist has written in Pac-Man style font with rainbow colors, staggered one line at a time and with margins stepped in descension: “FULLY” “AUTOMATED” “LUXURY” “GAY” “SPACE” “COMMUNISM.” Solidarity.

An even happier Mr Cool Ice a few years or so later. In a New York black shirt with white pin striping, he now has ear plugs and a happy skull and crossbones wearing shades. His forehead is adorned by a row of three skulls, with a letter on each scalp spelling I C E. It can’t be overemphasized how happy, brilliant and posi he looks here. I still probably wouldn’t vote for him but this picture cheers me on dim days. The famous Mr Cool Ice with a megawatt smile and even more Mr Cool Ice tattoos on his arms and neck. He also added some three dimensional shading to Mr Cool Ice across the top of his chest.

I understand why people would think (hope?) this is talk to text, but I direct your attention to the grammar marks around “Partner.”
Screen grab of the candidate’s hate mail, where this tough guy or gal makes numerous elementary errors of speech, word usage, etc. I’ve highlighted how they write “Partner,” as in so-called partner, or just partner as either gay slur or even hatred against unmarried cohabitation. They’ve capitalized the P all right, but it begins in one quotation mark and ends in two (or “inverted comma/s” for English speakers outside North America). This casts doubt on whether this was typed to text, but does suggest the sobriety of the writer was lacking.
