At at time when the very idea of content moderation is under assault, I wrote about an effort that gives me hope: a $27 million project to transform trust and safety with open-source tools in the same way that open source transformed cybersecurity www.platformer.news/roost-open-s...
Clint Smith felt that need acutely. Smith is the chief legal officer of Discord, which had been a Smyte customer before it shut down. Suddenly, the company had to build its own safety stack from scratch.

“The things we needed to build had already been built by Snap, Reddit, and other companies,” Smith said. “But all of them were proprietary implementations done by those companies’ engineering teams. We asked ourselves, why can’t we have a common set of tools?”

This is very big news, a long time in the making... A consortium of companies/philanthropies and others building core open source tools for safety that many companies kept having to build from scratch (often badly).

Ensuring user safety at scale takes massive resources. That’s why we’re excited to partner with ROOST—helping smaller orgs enhance safety, meet regulations, and compete. More safety, more competition, more user choice.

Proud that Project Liberty Institute is a founding partner of ROOST! Collaboration will ensure alignment in the critical area of trust and safety.

Institute fellow Audrey Tang and Team PLI (but not me this time!) are on the ground at the Paris AI Summit in support.

« Happily, these factors aren’t just liquefying the ground below Big Tech’s dominance. They’re also powering bold visions for alternatives that stop tinkering at the edges of the monopoly tech paradigm, and work to design + build actually democratic, independent, open & transparent tech. Imagine! » 🥂
