💧 How can we plan for future droughts when past observations are limited?

UKCEH hydroclimatologist @wilsonchan.bsky.social explains how ‘hindcasts’ and the UNSEEN method can help us explore rare but plausible scenarios, filling gaps in observations.

New blog post: www.ceh.ac.uk/news-and-med... 🧪
Low water levels at Pontsticill reservoir, south Wales, in July 2025. Graph showing unprecedented low summer rainfall found in one example realisation of the ECMWF hindcast archive (in red) compared to observed summer rainfall (in black). The light grey shading indicates the highest and lowest rainfall in the observations over this period. Series of maps of UK illustrating four storylines of river flows given a dry or wet July combined with sustained settled or unsettled conditions as a result of a shifted jet stream to the north or south of the UK.

🌊 Streamflow Stripes are here!!! 🌊
Just in time for #ShowYourStripes Day – 21st June 🌍

Our team at @ukceh.bsky.social has created UK river flow stripes to visualise how these have changed over time.

CANARI scientists from @ukceh.bsky.social have created UK river flow stripes.

High flows are rising in the north/west and drought risk growing in parts of the south/east. Adaptation is needed to reduce impacts from swings between wet/dry.

Stripes for ocean acidification, air quality, and biodiversity loss reveal alarming trends.

CANARI aims to better understand North Atlantic atmospheric and oceanic circulation and how they may shift in the future.

The stripes tell the story of how our climate has changed and it's not just warming at the surface. Temperatures are changing for the rest of the atmosphere and the ocean too 🌍

🔊21st June is #showyourstripes day 🌍

2024 was the warmest year on record globally. The stripes help start a conversation about climate change and climate action🥵

🌊 Exciting research could help the UK better prepare for droughts...

It shows a link between North Atlantic ocean temperatures and UK summer droughts, with signs up to 18 months ahead ☀️

@amulyachevuturi.bsky.social explains more: www.ceh.ac.uk/news-and-med...

Infographic with maps showing how North Atlantic Ocean temperatures are linked to UK droughts many months later.

This study was supported by the CANARI project and was a collaboration between @ukceh.bsky.social @noc.ac.uk, @ncas-uk.bsky.social and @ecmwf.int

The study reveals a teleconnection pathway linking North Atlantic sea surface temperature patterns, associated with freshwater inflows into the subpolar region, to shifts in the North Atlantic Current and jet stream, and reduction in UK precipitation and river flows at long lead times

North Atlantic Ocean patterns can signal UK summer droughts up to 1.5 years in advance; offering major potential for early drought forecasting.

Nice international commentary on hydrological transitions aka whiplash…including our @ukceh.bsky.social researchers who are working on such transitions in the UK, within the @canari-science.bsky.social project. More from this team soon (at EGU for example)….

👨‍💻💡 CANARI SPRINT 💡👩‍💻
Our Sprint is a week-long coordinated effort of several research centres and around 40 researchers to analyse the data from the Large Ensemble. We are looking for how the ocean, atmosphere, sea ice and connections between could be changing. #ClimateScience
