Part of the fun of photographing #frostflowers is deciding how to take the shot -- so many sides and angles. They can look very different from different perspectives. For example, these two shots of one frost flower.

This frost flower is seen from the top and one side with an "arm" across its top and and a swirling "skirt" at the bottom with a grooved vertical shaft. From this angle, the "arm" is on the left side, the shaft and skirt aren't visible. Instead there is a "wall" with two deep curves protruding from it.

This frost flower is one of the more symmetrical ice ribbons that dittany, water, and freezing temperatures produce. The brown stem in the middle of the photo is the plant that the water squeezed out of as it froze. I never know where I am going to see a frost flower, but the common dittany likes to grow at the edges of opennings in the woods. I found this one alongside our road on the way to bring back the trash can.

A tall, swirling frost flower is partially transparent where it is melting. In my area, the dittany plant can form frost flowers when the temperatures are below freezing overnight but the ground is not already frozen. The cold temperatures cause liquid in the stem of the dittany to expand, causing cracks to form along the length of the stem. Water is then forced out throw the cracks and freezes upon contact with the air. As more water is drawn through the cracks it pushes the thin ice layers further from the stem creating the 'flower'. This frost flower has a window in it that lets you see a structure within it.

A medium sized tan and white dog stands on a trail in a woods that in this area is dominated by white oaks. Their leaves that are mostly a bright red which is a fairly unusual color as they generally a much deeper and darker red (or even a reddish brown).

A reflection in a glass building shows a brick church and the branches of a nearly bare tree. There is a distinct edge that is the corner of the building. Along the edge is an actual tree that is also nearly bare. Its branches are 'touching' the reflected tree branches as if they a part of the same tree.

Fall color is finally starting to slowly come on, though the color is much better in some parts of the woods. Happily for me, one of the better spots is right at our house.

@aferguson.bsky.social Shocking discovery today: I was checking out the paph orchid flower as it’s opened up now, and it looks like there is a second flower on the same stalk — that’s never happened before! I’m not sure if it will mature or wither and fall off, but what a surprise to see.

A malamutt called Giddy is wading in a creek in a fall woods. There are leaves on the ground and large flat, squarish rocks line the banks of the creek. A muscular tan dog with a white chest, white forlegs, a white muzzle, and a skinny white-tipped tail stand in a pond that is a deep orange-brown from reflected leaves. A beagle mix is standing on the sloping bank of a lake. His head is down and his butt is up and he is some distance away. I'd like to be able to tell you something about this huge solo monolith on the beach at Lækjavik Nature Preserve but there's nothing about it in my #Iceland geology book and my google-fu failed to turn up any geologic information.

The Hólmanes-Eskifjörður Nature Preserve was my favorite hike of the trip to #Iceland. It had it all -- scenic variety, an interesting and challenging trail, critters, flowers, and solitude.

This trail is on the east coast of Iceland. The photo looks across Reyðarfjörður to the snow-covered mountains on the other side. The water is very still and there are several large rocks (tiny islands?) exposed in it. In the foreground is a rugged terrain with a mix of lava and greenery. This is the eightpetal mountain-avens which is the national flower of Iceland. The flower is found on stalks 1-4 inches long (3–10 cm) long, and has eight rounded white petals with yellow inner bits. A large, triangle-shaped sheer cliff with rugged walls dominates the photo. It is flat on top. In the background are the waters of Eskifjörður with a gull or tern flying overhead and many small ducks that appear as dots on the water.
