Of course the anchor of the — fancy fucking mermaid sticking out at the top, bigger than any creature Ed’s seen in his own life, and, of course, heavy as anything. “It’s French,” Stede says, stroking it with his untrapped wrist. “I had it imported.” “Mhm, yeah, yeah.” Ed’s walking around, sussing out the weak points. He needs a hundred men to move this thing. Where the fuck is he gonna find a hundred men? “Tell me more,” he says to Stede, near pleading. As long as he’s talking, he’s alive. As long as this anchor lays pressing into his stomach he’ll get closer and closer to a point of silence— “It was modeled after Mary.” Stede says. Sighs. “I really should reach out to her, if this… you know.” “No, I don’t know.” “Ed—” “Shut up, please—” “Ed,” his voice cracks. “It’s been hours.”

You don’t wanna go home?” She makes a high whine of a noise, still half-slumped against the wall. “I have to peeee.” “Mmm…” Ed hesitates for a sec, magnetized back to the club. She could do for another shot— but, “No, c’mon. Our uber is gonna be here—” “Boober.” Stede says, looking down at her own chest. She wipes at her face limp-wristed, puppy-pawed. Home time, for sure.

He feels small. The blanket covering him covers his head, and though it’s a little disorienting he floats in the senses for a moment— warmth, dark, silence. He wishes he could stay here all day and not have to worry. The thing about Stede, though, is that wherever he is the worries are. He takes a moment to take a deep breath. That’s funny. His breaths are coming out all sniffly. Oh. He looks down to his hands. Paws. Non-dextrous and dime-sized. That makes sense. Suddenly, the blanket is ripped off of him. He nearly bounces away at the motion, but is quickly comforted by a hand stroking his back. “Hey.” Ed says, quiet. “You’re a bunny again?” Stede can’t really nod, or speak, but he hopes his nuzzle into Ed’s hand speaks for itself. “Aww, babe. Okay.” Ed comforts. He sits up, getting comfy, before picking Stede up and bringing him to hold. The all round pressure and warmth of Ed’s arms is something so sweet he can’t put words to— but lucky him, he doesn't have to right now. “I gotcha,” Ed says. Stede believes him.

He never got making out. The concept, like, sure. Fun. Awesome. He would sometimes dream about a faceless man wrapping him in his arms, fully, big hand on his neck as he pulled him in. But then, the dream would fizzle out. It always kinda squicked him watching all the guys on his ship eating each other's faces— was it boredom? The way they pranced around with hickeys proudly on their necks and collarbones, kiss-blissed eyes shining bright. In Ed’s mind it was a weird sort of foreplay. He always skipped forward, straight to the point. Now, though, things have shifted. He loves the guy he’s fucking, and that might be all the difference— the way Stede is angled over him, one hand holding himself upright and the other holding Ed’s head secure as he kisses him relentlessly. He’s good at this, full of enthusiasm, coaxing little mutters out of Ed he didn’t know he could make. He bites at Ed's lip as Ed laughs, shutting himself up by kissing Stede back. He can’t get enough. The thought of Stede moving a little lower and sucking a bruise into his chest makes Ed feel so suddenly lightheaded he’s afraid he might faint. Maybe, just maybe, Stede could kiss him better.

“I don’t want to talk to you.” “I know.” “Then why aren’t you leaving?” Ed crosses his arms across his chest, then quickly uncrosses them to wipe the tears budding at his eyes. Stede hears the click in his throat as he swallows, nervous. “I don’t want to let this go.” “You do, though. You say that you don’t, but you do. You don’t love me.” “Ed— I promise you. It was a fuckup. A misunderstanding. I’m really sorry. It was silly of me. One of the silliest situations I’ve ever ended up in. But it doesn’t mean I don’t love you. You don’t have to love me back, but don’t tell me I don’t love you. That could never be true.” Ed breathes a shaky breath. “You’re not sleeping in the bed. You can sleep on the floor for…” he counts out loud, long-winded and dramatic, “Three nights. For the amount of kisses you gave her.” “Fair.” Stede utters, biting down his smile. Back in the bedroom! Ed whispers something under his breath that Stede can’t quite catch. “What was that?” “Don’t say I don’t love you either.” he sniffles. “Not true.” Stede smiles for three seconds.

CW illness early dating days, vegetarian ed cooks stede chicken just to be nice bc he knows it’s one of stede’s safe foods but he undercooks it (its a beautiful mid-rare) and stede eats it anyway (people pleaser, in love, stupid), and stede spends their third date so ill and ed spends it taking care of this man having salmonella poisoning over his apartment. (he falls in love deeper, somehow). stede, post vomit, pale as a ghost on ed’s couch: it was delicious, though. worth all the fuss. ed cringing so hard while still petting stede’s hair back: thanks, babe.
