So I learnt today that my PhD thesis has been placed on the Dean’s List of Exceptional Theses!!!
“To gain a place on the Dean's List, a doctoral thesis has to meet criteria demonstrating excellence: a timely completion and agreement by all examiners that the thesis is of exceptional quality in every respect. The exceptionality of the research is demonstrated through the contextual and analytical content, originality, quality of expression, accuracy of presentation, and contribution to knowledge in the field. Your thesis was considered by the examiners to be among the top ten percent they had examined in their respective fields.”

Some pretty plants and leaves.

Had a few hours in Tōkyō before I needed to head to the airport so looked around The East Gardens of the Imperial Palace and surrounds.
Tōkyō station - an older building built ornately out of red and cream bricks, with a bit paved area in front. behind the station are many modern skyscrapers and above is a clear blue sky. A very clear pond reflecting everything around it - in the foreground on the bank of the pond is some snow. On the back right part of the pond is a wee bridge and behind the pond are many different trees some deciduous without leaves and some evergreens. Behind the trees is a modern skyscraper. Looking along a gravel path that splits so is making the shape of a Y. There are leafless trees either side with the winter sun shining through them and a bright blue sky above. A paved path alongside a moat. Between the path and the moat is a row of smallish weeping willows that are bright green in the sunshine. In the distance are a bunch of skyscrapers.

And while I didn’t stay up for fireworks or anything on New Year’s Eve I did see some pretty light displays on New Year’s Day - the video does not do TeamLab Biovortex justice but it was an amazing experience.

New Years decorations and food/drink
A Japanese new years decoration made of pine branches, bamboo, red berries and ruffled cabbages. A mocktale that is clear with a pink layer at the bottom, and obviously fizzy. In a tall glass. Four pieces of sushi on a stone platter. They look like they have pieces of fish or crab on top (and one with an avocado slice) but the fish is made out of potato or yam. A small pine cone with a little gold fam sticking out of the top and a wee round rope knot on the side.

Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple
Lots of stone sculptures of people leading up a hillside. Each face has a different expression A 2 tiered pagoda with some of the stone carvings around it. A small red torii gate over a stream. Behind the torii gate is a small pond with the stream running down the hillside into it.

Adashino Nembetsu-ji Temple with its bamboo grove (not the big famous one most people go to but still lovely)
Some rustic wooden steps forming a meandering path through a grove of tall bamboo Looking up to the top of the bamboo where the leafy parts look like they meet above the path 3 small raccoon type statues in a big patch of moss Lots of carved stones, possibly headstones, with a tall pagoda shaped stone in the middle.

- and the bigger Kamogawa Ricer
A round cute bunny carved out of stone, on top of a stone plinth. Part of the temple are behind it. If you zoom in on the red fence you will see lots of tiny white bunnies have been placed there. A really big red Torii has that spans a road. A small stream or canal with stone banks. On one side there are weeping willows leaning over the stream and there are houses on the other side. A landscape photo of a flat calm river, so calm it is reflecting the blue sky and fluffy white clouds. There are grassy banks either side, then paths and then various houses and buildings.

In Kyoto I’ve seen:
- Kyoto Station
- Kyoto Tower
- Higashi Honganji Temple
Inside a busy train station with a very high roof that’s made out of a metal frame in a cris cross pattern. A tall white needle shaped tower rising above a big building. The tower has a red viewing platform near the top and a couple of red stripes near the point. The sky behind is bright and blue. 2 of the main buildings that make up the temple, the one on the right has a 2 layered roof. They have the interesting roof shape where it curves out to the corners which turn up a bit. There is a big gravel/stone area in front of the buildings. A white signed frame on wood, with a hedge behind it, the sign says “never out of stock: our greedy human desires.”

Belated posts from my last day in Tokyo - went to a very sweet temple.
A bronze statue of a nodding cat on a stone plinth. Four shelves of hundreds of white nodding cats - they’re sitting on their hind with one of their front paws raised by its head. They each have a red ribbon with a bell round their neck. The cats come in many different sizes from about 2cm tall to 30cm tall. More nodding cats, these ones are arranged in semi circles of varying sizes with the smaller ones in the middle semicircle and the biggest ones in the outer semicircle Looking up moved path towards a temple with a green roof. Either side of the path are small round shrubs with taller deciduous trees behind them
