Here in Western WA, it's the Big Dark, when the seasons, time change, and weather conspire to make things especially dreary. I get some degree of S.A.D. as well. But recently I've taken to looking at my officemate, Kasha, and thinking, he's handling it well, I can too.

@1snugthejoiner.bsky.social Our drive through KY a couple years back spurred me to do some reading, including this. He mentions chestnut blight as a substantial blow to self-sufficiency for a lot of rural folks. Haven't finished it yet but he's tugging on a variety of interesting threads.

Quick follow-up, I also laid hands on a copy of this, which is especially interesting to me since it helps explain why the parcel fabrics are often so jank, as well as gets into some railroad topics. It looks similarly good in terms of balancing lay terms and technical depth.

@miraphorism.bsky.social I acquired this and started perusing it last night. Seems very good and exactly what I wanted, at least at first glance. FWIW.

Somehow, even though we're in the year 2025, I managed to read an entire book.
Hillbilly, A Cultural History Of An American Icon, by A. Harkins
Main take-away: I don't know what chemicals Al Capp was on when making Li'l Abner content, but that stuff is WILD.

Well, I was looking for a picture of a woman lounging while men fan her, but then I found the best gif on the Internet, and I'll just share that instead.

Fun fact: I'm still recovering from that time iTunes had a mental breakdown and decided anything with multiple artists on it was actually a Ray Brown album
