Capturing Alaskan scenes, happenings, and experiences for all to see. Also, sharing the life of my garbage can, Derby (they/them). I don’t see typos. Opinions are my own. Live, work, and play on Dena'ina Lands.
The moon is out tonight! It's 99.3% full at the time of this photo and still appears round/not flat.

Derby is reporting a glaze of ice. The lid is frozen shut. It is also freezing sprinkling out.

Happy Garbage Day to all that celebrate! Derby didn’t get knocked down all the way today.

Sorry there is no official snow report from Derby due to Garbage Day. I think 8.5” fell since last night and a 2 day total of 10.5”.

The bird bath is expected to remain closed until further notice.

Happy garbage eve to all that celebrate!

Derby won’t be able to do a side hustle of supporting snow observations tomorrow because of garbage day. Garbage day must always take first priority as Derby prefers.

Last night's aurora in Anchorage, AK is friendly to the eyeballs and mind. Please enjoy!

In scientific terms, the band that starts off was moving up from the south, got all wiggly, and told the rest of sky to get lit. I'm glad the sky listened.

Happy Garbage Eve to all that celebrate. Derby has 1/4” of snow for the week and is also reporting 100% jerk cloud cover.
January 20, 2026 at 7:09 AM
The moose has upgraded this to a Jerk in the Sky Warning and is advising every old man to yell at the clouds.

Go wake grandpa now!
January 20, 2026 at 4:28 AM
The squirrel is reporting a 134% chance of jerks in the sky for my area. 😭

The snow adornment is hanging on for its life tonight. It’s wrapped its self around the wood. I’ve never seen it do this before. It’s going to do its best to hang on through the brutal attack that it will face tonight. Long live the snow adornments!
January 16, 2026 at 3:49 AM
This might be the last night for the snow adornment. 😢

The weather is going to murder them and there’s nothing that will stop this horror from happening!

Happy garbage eve to all that celebrate!

Derby is finishing out the week having accumulated 6 inches of snow. The very top of the snowpack is a hard quarter inch of ice. It took some work to get the measuring tape through it.
January 13, 2026 at 5:42 AM
The snow adornments are back!

Who’s ready for more snow?!
January 10, 2026 at 1:00 AM
Some forest scenes during the last snow event in Anchorage (shot at 120fps and slowed 4x). More is on the way starting late Fri!
January 9, 2026 at 1:49 AM
After a record setting snow, I decided to bring back the shovel cam! It was about 0F/-18C, perfect for that squeaky snow sound.

We are going into a snowier pattern. I wanted to be sure my future self would be happy that my past self made room to put the more snow.

The garbage truck left Derby in a horizontal position. Since then he’s picked up almost 1” of snow. Total since yesterday is 15” which means 6” piled up on Derby while waiting for the truck (8am). That means nearly 7” of fuffy joy in 6 hours!

Teachers, feel free to use this scenario for quizzes.
January 6, 2026 at 11:17 PM
Happy garbage day to all that celebrate!

Derby has accumulated 8 inches (20 cm) of fluffy joy as of 8 AM. Derby won’t be reliably accumulating fluffy joy today due to the garbage truck’s expected arrival.

A decision has been made on a paint refresh. Moon shot seems appropriate for me with some Swiss coffee.
December 31, 2025 at 11:55 PM
Happy Garbage Eve to all that celebrate! It’s the last one of 2025 for Derby.

Derby accumulated an inch of snow for the week.

Doing it the hard way, a boat going against the tide through sea ice.

I see a moose!

Please enjoy some Christmas eye candy.

Some of my favorite auroras from 2025. Wait until the end to see my most viewed aurora video.

Merry Christmas Eve to those that celebrate!
