Yay it’s my book’s birthday; don’t yell about pubes in public
An angry character shouts in the distance, “I hope they step on a million stray legos. I hope they get an ingrown pube!” A second character in the background responds, “Jelly you gotta not yell about pubes in public. Also, mind the ice.” A nervous young person with freckles and short hair hides behind an evergreen bush in the foreground.

This would single-handedly transform the lives of everyone I know in such profound ways it is difficult to fully articulate, but it would also let us actually make more and different and crazy things

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

I’m always happy to sign them when I’m tabling at cons! I’m unfortunately done tabling for the year but hope to be back at it in 2026!

It’s so annoying that we all have to just continually point out how rules around/between decorum and violation are applied asymmetrically to vulnerable groups versus the people who are always hassling them, and it’s extra insulting that the people in charge are trying to lol it away.

This one made me lose it! I was only able to do it with the hive charm that refills your last health unit lost over time + lots of breaks

Newsletter: This is The Case Against Generative AI, a comprehensive analysis of a financial collapse built on myths I’ll dispel, the markets’ unhealthy obsession with NVIDIA's growth, and the fact that there is not enough money in the world to fund OpenAI.

If I have met your cat(s) in real life or we’ve shared a meal I would love it if you could reply/DM me a picture of them in a cute/funny pose! Drawing a tiny one-page personal zine w lots of cats and would rather draw known cats where possible-they won’t all fit but would be fun to include some!

I keep thinking about this piece. It feels so odd to have someone put into words what I suspected. I think the ideal authors for current publishing's standards are influencers/celebrities: built-in audience, unrelated income streams, someone else does their PR/comments moderation, willing to shill

I spent the summer reporting this essay on why it seems harder than ever to sell a book right now—especially if it isn't a debut and comes with the dreaded "sales track." I'm grateful to the writers, agents, editors, publishers & experts who spoke to me for this piece: thewalrus.ca/the-publishi...

it took me less than 5 minutes to do my 3 calls.

"i saw on the news trump is threatening to shut down the government if democrats don't bend the knee over trans healthcare. i will never vote for [rep] again if they give up trans healthcare. i would rather the government shut down."

that's it.

So far the biggest downside to going from hollow knight replay right into silksong is: it did take me a full 25 hours to realize that holding down the dash button made hornet keep sprinting

Does anyone ever try to sell original art at comics shows? Every time I've done this people are so squeamish about touching an original watercolor, even if it's in a plastic sleeve. And they sell very few, even if I price them super low. Any tips?
careydraws.bsky.social
Also it took like, 1-2 years for each batch of 30 to sell & some of them went online later. And I was making a lot of hi-viz fanart; I think if I tried the same thing now it would be harder for a number of reasons! Interesting puzzle to think about
careydraws.bsky.social
these were also all postcard-sized & I displayed them laid out but slightly overlapping in individual transparent sleeves in a slightly raised/angled display tray to make them feel a little less precious-- had the same problem with people not wanting to touch them otherwise! it's tough!
careydraws.bsky.social
I sold original ink drawings w/ limited greyscale marker tone of fantasy prop designs back in ~2018 for $40-70 each & they found homes-- but I think it helped that I had posted them all online as a series leading up to the cons; people who bought them had usually seen them & wanted their fave
