People with serious medical needs, diabetes, thyroid conditions, are being denied their daily medications. One woman couldn’t check her blood sugar for over a day. Others have gone without essential medication for days.

Reports describe more than 20 people crammed into 12-by-12 foot cells, forced to sleep sitting up, with only one toilet and no privacy. The rooms are cold, access to food and water is limited, and hygiene is neglected.

No matter where someone was born, the United States should never tolerate inhumane treatment. Yet right now, detainees in ICE custody are facing conditions that are simply unacceptable in any country that claims to uphold human rights, let alone one that prides itself on freedom and the rule of law.
