the most delightful version of logging on to see what news you've missed
Dr Ramsdell, whose phone had been on airplane mode when the Nobel committee tried to call him, told the BBC's Newshour Programme that his first response when his wife said, "You've won the Nobel prize" was: "I did not."

To which Ms O'Neill replied that she had 200 text messages that suggested he had.

American Political Science Association 2025 was scheduled for Vancouver (yes, that's Canada) but was made partially virtual bc non-US-citizen academics currently in the US were worried about getting back into the US after leaving it for the conference.

To my UniMelb colleagues: if you haven't already done it, please take a look at the NTEU's pre-bargaining survey. You would have received an email on 17 Sept, member or not. We really do want as many different perspectives as we can get to make sure we fight for what staff really need. Thanks!

Competent security sector reform (SSR) includes lustration and vetting processes, policy change, human rights education, independent oversight, possibly trials for the worst offenders, and yes maybe abolishing whole institutions.

It wasn’t an accident, it was Made this way, not just by years of policy and culture, but turbo charged by the second Trump era. It is not an organization of just a few bad apples there is something desperately sick and depraved about what we are unleashing on our neighbors today

And no, I'm not neurodivergent and I don't have 'issues' stemming from being classed as a smart kid. Other than being a professor now, of course.

Its use in early grades is debatable (I had 'gifted' English and Math starting grade 3 or 4), but given continued time in the accelerated classes, I completely tested out of like a year of Uni with AP credits. Still did the rest of it with everyone else.

Honest answer from a former gifted kid: People learn at different speeds and that varies across subjects, not just people. It's a way to keep the kids who learn faster from getting hella bored in those subjects (not necessarily creating separate entire classes).

An unprecedented violation of our civic and Constitutional traditions. Calling every military leader in the world back to the U.S. to hear a wildly inappropriate partisan campaign speech followed by a fascist call to use the military against Americans.

Russia has officially withdrawn from the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture after Putin signed a law denouncing the treaty. By pulling out, Russia blocks the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture from monitoring its detention facilities.
