Sometimes you are entranced by the beautifully mundane, and often you are punished for attempting to understand it. It can be allegorical for the trans experience, for foster care and homelessness, etc. It's the most human to relate to the monstrous, & I believe more games should lean into it.

My two in-development games, F/reak Wing and FairyTale Lane tackle this head on. Your characters are creatures, freaks, who have to hide who they are after being displaced from their homes.

Introduction
Freak Wing is a tabletop roleplaying game for 3-5 players. It takes inspiration from Monsterhearts 2, The New Mutants, and The Midnight Club and uses the Carved from Brindlewood system as the foundation for its mechanics.

Players take the role of patients in the F Wing, nicknamed Freak Wing by other patients and orderlies, of St. Panteleimon’s Center for the Ill. The player characters, or PCs, have been placed here by their parents or the government due to the development of preternatural gifts called Curses to keep them safe from society and study the cause.

The PCs will investigate different strange occurrences in St. Panteleimon’s, unlovingly called Saint Pants, and the surrounding area that betray the laws of reality and challenge their psyche. Along the way, the Patients of Freak Wing discover a conspiracy that runs deeper than the twisted heart of Saint Pants and tears at the fabric of the universe itself.

The main thoroughfare of Laurel Canyon lazily winds through a storybook forest. Between the misty pinnacle of Mount Olympus and the canopied homes of Wonderland Avenue lies FairyTale Lane. A veritable paradise and last resort for the FairyTales of the Storylands. What was once the water source for the Tongva people has become the haven of your favorite story book characters.

Though they are extraordinary folks who have led extraordinarily storied lives. They have to face day to day challenges, just like you and I. Rent, love lost, and lousy neighbors are everyday occurrences, but even with all of that, being a FairyTale means counting on your Neighbors.

There are shadowy agents lying in wait. Staking out their homes, tailing them to work, and detailing their every lives. Eventually the FairyTales will learn of this Federal Bureau, but first comes living easy while California dreamin’.

FairyTale Lane is inspired by the award-winning comic book series, Fables, by Bill Willingham and the Video Game series, The Wolf Among Us by Telltale Games. Living and working in a post 9/11 Los Angeles provides a setting framework to provide an opportunity for groups of people to experience the sunshine, starchasing, and dark underbelly of the City of Angels with a Fairy Tale spin. Lingering darkness, fantasy, heartbreak, and mystery are all themes this game explores.

Films like this and media like Fables pushes me to develop narrative worldbuilding and player character mechanical options to help players and GMs alike tap into this theme in interesting ways.

Something prevalent in my TTRPG design is how I approach the Outsider breaching the unknown and disrupting it, also having the fabulous and magical be misunderstood and punished is a major theme present in future works as well.

The score heightens and elevates the entire production, especially during the Underwater ballet between Julie Adams and the Creature. It's one of the most magical scenes out to film and witnessing it showcases how much the sequence influenced GDT’s interpretation in Shape of Water.

The movie is upsetting to watch, especially through the present day lens through having a better understanding of colonialism and its disruption of indigenous lands and natural biomes. The 'heroes' of the story are nothing more than wealthy 'adventurers' who misuse locals and (mostly) pay for it.

The Creature suit designs and acting is impressive, not only for the time, but in general. Something lost from the overreliance of CGI and motion capture.

Ricou Browning’s work as the underwater performer of the Creature in this (and the future sequels) is elegant, nothing short of legendary

The premise is simple:

Archeologists enter the Amazon rainforest after finding evidence of an ancient, undiscovered creature. This brings Richard Carlson, Julie Adams, and Richard Dennings face to face with the eponymous Creature while traveling down the Amazon River on their boat, Rita.
