Working at the 2025 NYC Charter Revision Commission, always thinking about housing and land use. Also here for politics, sports, and bad jokes. Go bears.
Did they?

An affordable housing mandate.

Even those who don't traditionally get involved in housing questions have supported them. The League of Women Voters, @citizensunionny.bsky.social, @cbcny.bsky.social, @nylcv.bsky.social and environmental advocates, Democratic clubs, and LGBTQ+ advocates have spoken out.

And advocates pushing to re-shape our housing system to deliver deeply-affordable, community-controlled social housing have supported these proposals as a step toward a more equitable city.
November 4, 2025 at 1:21 AM
Longtime housing experts and policy thinkers have made it clear that these are long-needed, commonsense reforms to the city's land use and housing systems.

The people who advocate for, and build, affordable housing in New York have been clear about how important these measures are.
November 4, 2025 at 1:21 AM
Not to mention the elected officials in support, who have fought for a more affordable city and state for years: Kathy Hochul, @bradlander.bsky.social, Donovan Richards, @bkbpreynoso.bsky.social, @marklevinenyc.bsky.social, @keithpowersnyc.bsky.social, Erik Bottcher, and many more.

Tomorrow is Election Day. I hope you'll vote for proposals 2-6.

If you'll indulge me, a quick run-down of the remarkable coalition of supporters: Starting with the editorial boards of the Daily News, Post, and Crain's, and though the Times has declined to weigh in, Mara Gay.

Would recommend you read the elections section in the Commission’s report (it’s very readable, I promise!), but this in particular is on page 95 www.nyc.gov/assets/chart...

These are straightforwardly just descriptions of *what already happens today.*

We don’t have to speculate: a wave of cities have moved to even-year elections, and what has happened is that more people vote, and when they do, they spend time looking into what’s downballot. That’s a new audience.

Very cool* how Councilmembers are weaponizing 130% AMI units that come from 421-a to stop proposals for city-financed deeply affordable housing, or MIH levels (avg 60% AMI = $2187 for a two-bed).

*not cool

The fifth proposal that will be on NYC ballots this November would move NYC toward holding elections in even-numbered years, when more than double the number of people vote.

Yesterday, the 2025 NYC Charter Revision Commission voted to adopt its final report and put five questions on the November ballot - four on housing and land use. These would help build more housing more quickly, especially affordable housing and modest housing.
