My completely uninformed take is, that architecture was a way more significant type of communication. (way less mass media, less literate people). So the only way to build a legacy was to literally build a legacy. We remember the medicis for their buildings and patronage, not for their businesses.

It's really disappointing. As ghoulish and evil as the "titans of industry" in the early 20th century where, at least they built cool shit to leave a legacy. These guys are just uninspired and frustrated because they where too late to build a monopoly.
