New laws allow welfare payments to be cancelled for people with arrest warrants – even before guilt is proven. The risks are serious, write Zoe Staines, Francis Markham, Hannah McGlade and Thalia Anthony.

With a sneaky tweak, the government has made welfare recipients guilty until proven innocent
New social security laws allow payments to be cancelled for people with outstanding arrest warrants, even if they have not been charged or convicted, raising serious concerns about justice, rights and harm.

It’s no accident that foreign streaming services do little to promote Australian music and podcasts to Australians…and it’s no accident that our governments have chosen not to do more to fix it. Local content matters more in the digital age than ever

Why your Spotify Wrapped probably doesn’t have any new Australian music on it
If you don't have Australian artists on your Spotify Wrapped, you're not alone - it's the result of a structural, not individual, problem.

Nothing says transparency like shutting down all dissenting voices so you can wreck FOI laws
Labor's stacked committee just recommended passing their FOI destruction bill - despite overwhelming evidence AGAINST it.

Greens, Coalition, Lambie AND Pocock all filed dissenting reports. When everyone else says no, maybe listen?

One of the most common replies in any discussion of universal basic income is "but how do we pay for it?" and not once do those same people ever question the costs incurred by not doing UBI. We spend $1.5 trillion every year on the costs of child poverty alone. Poverty ain't free, folks. WE ALL PAY.

Last year AGL, was making $755 of profit per customer per year. Origin, Australia’s largest retailer, made $595 in profit per customer. 189% and 172% increase in profit respectively, Here’s the kicker. For every $100 of your electricity bill, just $12 is actually the cost of generating electricity.
Now is the time to talk about nationalising essential services – Max Chandler-Mather
If we’re serious about tackling the cost-of-living crisis, we need to put services like electricity and childcare back into public hands.
