Join this community forum to help NPS and ASALH design a plan for National Historic Landmark designation for Black public secondary schools.

Black Public High Schools 1870-1970 Project, led by Principal Investigator Amber N. Wiley, PhD.
Graphic for Black public hS listening session. October 9 on Zoom, 6 pm CDT

Community stakeholders in various parts of the country have expressed interest in National Historic Landmark designation for Black public secondary schools. The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) is working with National Park Service (NPS), scholars of the history of Black secondary education, and community advocates for extant schools to develop a strategy for evaluating eligibility for this designation. This listening session, which will be recorded for research purposes only, is one of the three community engagement activities of the Black Public High Schools 1870-1970 Project, led by Principal Investigator Amber N. Wiley, PhD.

Oh! I have an art mystery that I am currently working on- but we are mid-mystery, so no conclusion yet. And it is a portrait, not a book….

Took about 20 years. And I never thought a book about enslavers using deputization to give themselves policing power would be relevant to our times. But we are where we are.

My book, White Power: Policing American Slavery, is now available for preorder.

Cuts to and closures of university presses are 100% part of the separation (or as @mattseybold.bsky.social has called it "unbundling") of research and teaching in the humanities and the devaluation of both quite frankly--in this case at the expense of the career training admin claims to care about.

"Bucknell has decided to close its highly respected, decades-old UP in June 2026. The stated reason? The press serves scholars, not Bucknell undergrads. Bucknell undergrads—& some grad students as well—disagree." FANTASTIC piece on BUP's student internship program. networks.h-net.org/group/discus...

Tiya Miles! The introduction to wild girls is truly one of the most beautiful pieces. I’ve read in a while. And All That She Carried is masterful.

No solidarity. Reporters let Trump talk this way to a woman reporter and then clamor to get their own question answered. He used to do it to April Ryan, Yamiche Alcindor and Abby Phillip.

And that’s why he controls media. No solidarity.

In fairness, I am in the US system and the humanities- sounds like there are some distinct differences.

I mean, isn’t this just recreating the wheel? This is why colleges and universities sponsored journals and why we have academic presses for books…that is (was?) the system

This “explicit” is a weird editorial choice. The constitution gives the president no power over this at all. It’s not ambiguous.
