John Green has an essay on the band in Anthropocene Reviewed. He loves the band. In fact, the entire book is very good.

I saw this in a film class in college and was speechless by the end. The opening narration is hypnotic and pulls the viewer in. Great film!

I have 2 shelves to the left dedicated to Gatsby and modernism. Lots of foreign versions—French, Portuguese, German, and more. I taught Gatsby for 31 years and love the modernist period.

Nice! I am a retired English teacher and rather than get rid of all my books from school, I built additional shelves!

I taught her, her brother (last year), and her dad. I ran into the family a few weeks ago while buying a Christmas tree, and her brother FaceTimed her to speak to me. She was so looking forward to coming home for the holidays. This is beyond heartbreaking.

Many people thought Better Call Saul was too slow moving at first because they kept waiting for Jimmy’s shift to Saul. I disagreed and loved the pace. In fact, I thought BCS was better than BB , and I really liked BB.

I graduated from a good public high school in the late 70s. During a 9 weeks, we would read 4 novels and the next 9 weeks 4 Shakespearean plays. When I began teaching there 30 years ago, my students would read 500-page books—Invisible Man, Grapes of Wrath, etc. 10-15 years ago, things changed….

As a Boomer, I can confirm that quicksand was so ubiquitous on Saturday matinee movies and cartoons that I thought I would stubble into it while playing in my neighborhood.

And that hideous FIFA participation trophy up front.

My parents took me to it when I was 10 not long after it came out. The first time, it was the music that pulled me in. I’ve seen it so many times now that it hits me differently at different ages. It’s my favorite movie because it does capture the period perfectly. Oh yes, the music still rocks!

I’m now sad that my undergraduate college—Vanderbilt—didn’t beat Bama because they are playing so well and are so much fun to watch. I went to Bama law school, but Vandy is better at this point.

Your recommendations have always been great. BSG and yes, Spartacus—it really is immersive and tons of fun. I think you or one of the other critics I follow (Sepinwall, Fienberg, and more) suggested Halt and Catch Fire, too.

Same—born in 1960. I recall seeing The Beatles on Ed Sullivan. My mom was young and loved rock music, and she taught me so much. She loved Dionne Warwick, too.

Add the mainstream media’s failure to speak truth to power and hold all of the above accountable.

They are clueless about tax rates for the wealthy in the 50s. That’s one thing we should return to. Eisenhower would be considered a flaming liberal to these idiots.

The description of Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby: “he was one of those men who reach such an acute limited excellence at twenty-one that everything afterwards savours of anti-climax.” I finally understood this at my 10-year high school reunion.

This is going to negatively affect the economy because tourism will drop off. It’s so unnecessary.
