“Lansdell has crafted a unique, distinctive race—the knyads—whose social and political structure has deep implications for the plot.”
—Livia J. Elliot, Author of Dance with Me
I think it safely fits into cyberpunk, but also has a dash of fantasy and some light horror.”

Request for writers who consider me a friend, especially those of you who do WIPSnips or other engagement posts talking about your wip:

If you have the time and energy, post here about your wip. Give me CONTEXT. Tell me who your characters are and their relationships. Tell me about your setting.

Next, you’ll meet Prismer, an indentured servant at the Assembly Chambers. She’s committed crimes in the past and has been marked for them (which is why she wears a mask). She also has some useful skillsets. Standoffish on the surface, but very warm underneath. The 2 mcs inhabit different classes.

Well, we have my marine people evolved from corals: knyads. The first character you’ll meet is Oklas, who is a philanthropist and rebel sympathiser (the 5 sovereigns aren’t wonderful to live under). He's a politician and inventor who has founded a college.

Snippet from Dirt You Shall Become, short story in Dirt You Shall Become: The scent of rot was heavy in the shade behind the yew. Mille clutched the bucket of potato peels and coffee grinds to her chest and stared into the darkness behind the green archway of ivy twisting around a dead plumtree. Two beady eyes stared back at her.
“Is that you, Cleo? Ps-ps-ps.” She leaned forward and flicked her fingers to lure out the cat. A mosquito buzzed by her ear, and she waved it away, absentmindedly. Her heart drummed when the eyes in the dark blinked.
“Cleocatra? Come here, girl. Ps-ps.” Mood board for Dirt You Shall Become, upcoming short story collection with a garden theme.
6 pictures. Top: earthworm, pink peonies, middle: garden gnome, weeds. Bottom: fat toad and a shovel with dirt. All with a brown hue.
Text: Dirt You Shall Become. Garden-themed horror short stories by Karen Lykkebo. Coming Spring 2025

Sorry you're experiencing that, Erika. I haven't been online much, but your worldbuilding always brightens my timeline. If you need a break from everything, please prioritise yourself for a bit 🫂

Every day, for the month of October, I am going to read (and quickly edit) 2 chapters of my manuscript for book 2. I'm finishing up with chapter 4 today.
Going at this speed, I'm getting my first impression of my WIP from a reader's perspective. It's... shaping up the way I hoped it would 🩶

Yup, there are all kinds of payment thresholds that affect me in South Africa. Until a couple of years ago, you had to open a Payoneer account just to receive payments from Zon as they didn't deposit anything into you your bank account directly. We have to use the (dot)com site.

This book was a delight!
@cblansdell.bsky.social wrote an admirable sci-fi that is far from the usual adventure romp full of lasers and bling and swoosh!
It's a careful study into a being's sense and everything it entails.
I can't wait to get my hands on the second book of this duology!

"It’s a book that explores how a broken person comes into their own after being broken."

I'm catching up on cross-posting reviews. This past month I finished reading the excellent Noxious by Ayrton Silva. I've also finished Faust's Hannah and Gregory (review on the way). Current read: Austringer's Wrath by E.L. Lyons. Plenty of Easter eggs in there.

Day 30: Wrap-up

I'll continue being a bit scarce in October as I prepare my sequel for beta reading in November. Aside from that, I have a few art commissions in progress and a couple of other writing projects...

Day 1: Introductions

I am Coe, writing the sequel to Far Removed (which turns 2 on 5 September).
I will stop by to look at other people's posts. Otherwise, I'll most likely be working on the 2nd draft of my last 10 chapters.

A sci-fi book you've read with great worldbuilding

I want to mention one of my recent favorites here, because it doesn't get nearly enough attention.

It's fantastic. And there are no human characters! The knyads are a fascinating, semi-aquatic species

Agreed. So much exposure and so much negativity. Most of us are only on socials to sell our books or connect with like-minded authors who share that struggle. If your books are selling themselves, why be online at all?

I spent too long making this teaser video for my upcoming novel, but the good news is, ARC team wanted for a Princess Mononoke x Demon Slayer passion project.

Festivals. Apidecca has Beyashisik, the White Light festival. It commemorates their god and a historical event. The characters have something planned for this time.

#Septopolis 25

Moving into current events! Feel free to talk about multiple if you'd like to, but first and foremost I want to know what the characters might get to experience some R&R and fun times (this might tie into tomorrow's question, for maybe not so fun times!).

A daily prompt card for #Septopolis 2025, hosted by @khonri.bsky.social. Sept 25: Are there any unique festivals or public holiday events held here? Which would the characters within your plot end up a part of?

Interpret each prompt as suits your needs! Yap! Or don't!
Build a new place or talk about one you have. Make friends.

The background features a third of the monthly card’s image, a slightly blurred and purple hued image of a set photograph of Main Commercial Street in Fritz Lang's Metropolis (UFA, 1927).
