Outdoor workers are 3 times as likely to develop skin cancer as indoor workers. Dr @cherylepeters.bsky.social will use existing data to estimate the rates and costs of skin cancers caused by workplace sun exposure. The goal: to guide national efforts to reduce sun exposure and prevent future cases.

Dr Paul Demers will study the latest statistics to estimate how many work-related lung cancers are likely to arise in 2026 and how much they may cost workers and healthcare systems. He hopes this information will pave the way to better workplace #cancer awareness and prevention.

Many construction workers may be exposed to asbestos, which can cause lung cancer. It’s unclear how many undergo lung cancer screening or how their health and care compare to that of other construction workers. Dr Nathan DeBono aims to improve cancer prevention and screening for this at-risk group.

Cancer drugs can be toxic to healthy cells. Dr Hugh W. Davies will study how much contact healthcare workers have with these drugs in different environments and how the drugs may affect their health. His goal is to better understand the risk and make workplaces safer for healthcare professionals.

These grants are developed in close collaboration with labour unions and workers’ compensation boards. They bring #cancer researchers together to focus on preventing, detecting and treating work-related cancers – focusing on high-priority areas where we can make great strides.

Exciting news! We’re very pleased to announce the recipients of this year’s Workplace #Cancer #Research Grants. Every year, an estimated 10,000 workers in Canada are diagnosed with work-related cancers – so this research is vital to keeping all of Canada’s workers healthy:

After treatment with #cancer drugs called taxanes, many people develop neuropathy – a side effect that can impact people’s sensation or ability to move. Joanna Mbuya is studying how neuropathy changes with age in hopes of better understanding and managing this condition in people of all ages.
