this guy is clearly an asshole but I can't fathom the justification of diverting an entire flight of people because someone is sitting in what appears to be an open seat.

the guy bought a ticket, presumably with a credit card, charge him later?

This is absolutely wild. I’m on a cross country flight. We are being diverted midway through to Denver. The reason? Some dude is sitting in the exit row who didn’t pay the $155 fee and he refuses to move back to his seat.
