So, I’m providing an example here. This is from a retelling of ‘Frog, where are you?’ In (22a), the animal clitic is used =chuj3 (numbers are tones) and the 3m clitic refers to the boy in the text. In (22b) and (22c), the dog is introduced into the description and suddenly there are two animals.

So, success! I used tikz in the end to get it following @rpuggaardrode.bsky.social and your advice. I still can’t get the strikethrough to work though. It’s unclear to me how you set the positioning of where it occurs because it’s not a line style. Thanks!

With tikz, I can do the following, though it is again impossible to have (a) multiply-linked items (one sigma is assigned to two mother nodes) and (b) the rightmost alignment I can do with forest.

With forest, I can do the following, but you are *unable* to place another top level representation and have it associate to the lower left, e.g. like a suffixal tone might do.

After teaching a seminar on information structure last semester, I've begun to actually write a chapter on it for my grammar. One of my favorite Triqui sentences is the following one. It demonstrates several fun things at once…

Carmen quietly meditates on Paul's half-graded calculus exams as they happened to be lying in the sun this morning. I do not believe she helped with grading otherwise.

The magenta dragon came out well. It's hard to get a good angle of the eyes though.

Husband sees flashlight on Kohl's website (he is addicted to Kohls cash) only to discover that Torchy300 is underwhelmingly smaller than advertised.

Below is cepstral peak prominence, plotted by time for different human-tagged glottal categories. This reflects about 6,000 Triqui tokens of non-glottalized (coded NA) vs. post-glottalized vowels (/aʔ/).

This plot demonstrates a LOT of important findings from my work with a grad student. 1/n

Take my course at the LSA summer institute this summer! (I actually have no idea how many people are going to register.)

About 90 minutes painting. The body color was surprisingly hard to mix.

I don't recommend breaking a finger. I think the worse outcome for this is needing to be on antibiotics for the next 10 days.

I spent 5 minutes on bsky and I am not filled with feelings of doom! That’s good. Anyways, I painted a dragon and I’m really proud of it! Look! #ttrpg

What ends up occurring can be a very brief aperiodic portion of the signal -or- something that looks canonically like periodic non-modal phonation (the kind in textbooks) depending on its duration.

You can of course also just get subtle f0 and amplitude dips (cf. Gerfen and Baker, 2005).

The literature has the view that vocal fry is this long duration thing that spans over a syllable. That’s because the sociophoneticians are looking at it in languages where it is non-contrastive. We talk about it in English and it spans over whole words.

Here’s one Triqui example of it.

Here’s another example of aperiodicity with f0 tracking below. Note that we have very reasonable f0 tracking settings.

One of the issues that comes up here is just how we define “aperiodic” vs. “vocal fry” or “periodic.”

But here is a production which is labelled “aperiodic” and f0 is still being tracked. In fact, there is hardly any f0 dip here. It doesn’t look like vocal fry mainly because there seems to be a greater loss in periodicity.

What this means is that decisions regarding the type of voice quality variation you observe are somewhat independent of whether f0 is tracked.

Here is one example that I have tagged as “aperiodic” and we observe that f0 is no longer tracked well…
