One of my favorite stories!
Another deeply formative short story for me, Mike Meginnis' Navigators. This story so brilliantly subverts expectations around video games to (beautifully) explore a father-son relationship. It's something I pull regularly when teaching and a decade later, it's as wonderful as ever.
from the archives: "Navigators" from Hobart 12 by Mike Meginnis
Mike Meginnis's "Navigators" is one of my favorite short stories, one I've reread at least once a year since it first appeared in Hobart's 12th print issue in 2011. It begins in media res, after Joshu...

Rewriting a novel that i have been writing on and off for four years now. Not giving up because i am still having fun with this story. I have a feeling writing has been hard because i haven't been reading as much. So i am trying to read more now too. Current read: Intermezzo #writing

Painful realities depicted delicately in this movie. someone said no one cares that you are gay in Asia as long as you don't announce it. Or in the case of Angie and Pat, ask to keep the home you have shared with your partner of thirty years.

In light of everything happening, I wrote about how the KKK in the 1920s felt unstoppable, about the people that fought against them anyway, and about how fascism always fails. dansinker.com/posts/202…

Watched a play, "Poly", which unblocked my writer's block. Weird, funny, unnerving. Running until 16 February at DPAC.

Going to need everyone who wants to say “the masters tools will never dismantle the masters house” to actually READ the Audre Lorde essay with that title. It’s only 3 pages long.

I like how the things we are learning are stranger than any of the sci-fi books I read. Glass rain?

"An exoplanet the size of Jupiter has long intrigued astronomers because of its scorching temperatures, screaming winds and sideways rain made of glass."

An exoplanet where rain made of glass flies through the atmosphere was hiding another secret: It has an atmosphere that smells like sulfur.

Sometimes a scene just shows up in your mind when you’re writing, a little or a lot mysterious. I wrote about an exercise based on a common Tarot reading spread that can help you find the rest of the story. open.substack.com/pub/querent/...
On The Tarot And Writing
Tarot may or may not show you your future, but it can show you your blind spots. And you can use that in your writing.

First of all, has a person ever looked more mischievous? I wish I knew her.

Secondly, this is a miniature portrait from around 1660. It comes with overlays that allow you to change her appearance for fun. Filters from 500 years ago lol!
