So many survivors of neglect specifically had the experience of working so hard to be "easy" to love & deal with-- but being made to feel as if they were particularly hard to love & deal w/.
You need to know: what that experience "taught" you about yourself was unfair & untrue.

There are few more toxic expressions or sentiments in trauma or addiction recovery than "you just gotta push through it." If that "suck it up" sh*t worked, it would have worked for us by now.
Realistic recovery is about flow, not force. Strategy, not "strength."

After a rough night of nightmares, cooking something fun and engaging like Red Flannel Hash while listening to The Cure put me in a much better mental place because it's comfort food and I get to treat myself to something I don't make often. 'cuz, yeah... I'm worth it.
