By organizing citizens with shared values, they made anti-slavery politics more visible and influential in elections.

We’ve got to promote alternatives. Fusion voting offers an effective way to bring third-party voices into the conversation — and, hopefully, shape and influence it in a positive way.

There should be more than two parties. Fusion voting helps get us there — letting voters support third parties without wasting their vote, and helping candidates understand where their support comes from so policy reflects real constituencies. @politicsprof.bsky.social @harvardash.bsky.social

The principle that stands out most is equal protection — major parties shouldn’t squeeze out third-party voices, and independent voters shouldn’t be shut out by a two-party system.

Where does opposition to fusion voting come from? Mostly the two major parties, who see it as a threat to their power, even though power belongs to the people, not the parties or their chairs, but the citizens.

In our current system, you’re often stuck choosing between Democrats and Republicans — even when neither fully reflects your views. Fusion voting offers a better path. Used in NY and CT, it lets parties cross-endorse candidates, empowering voters to influence major parties without being spoilers.

Fusion voting is simple: it lets citizens form new parties without wasting votes or playing spoiler. Minor parties can cross-nominate candidates also backed by major parties, expanding choice without splitting the vote. @lwvnj.bsky.social
