Nice burns at Wilder Ranch State Park today! They did a great job building heat on this unit by lighting upper and lower slope to bring two flaming fronts together. Objectives include killing/limiting coyote brush and maintaining grasslands. #RxFire

Taking a moment to thank Jane Goodall for her vast contributions to the world of science. Not only did she document ground breaking behavior among primates, she was an active conservationist and a huge advocate for women in STEM. She will be missed! www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...

Great example! We need to find a way to fund home hardening and defensible space updates for those who can’t afford to do them on their on their own! Recent wildfires have shown us that entire neighborhoods need to transition to a more resilient state and that takes money and time… #fireresilient

Tonight I’m going to tell you about a California bill called SB326, authored by Senator Josh Becker and cosponsored by Senators Laird and Stern. This bill is perhaps the most significant wildfire legislation to land on Governor Newsom’s desk this year. I hope he signs it.

It would help to have a way to focus funding on low income/underserved residents, but also those in CA who are property rich and cash poor who live in very high risk areas, which includes much of my Central Coast region.

Fire historian Stephen Pyne wrote a commentary on our recent 🔥PNAS article: “Fire practices can support appeals to comanage ancestral lands or transfer them outright. Fire has entered the larger discourse over colonization. Roos et al. make this case explicit.” #goodfire

This is a super complicated issue. If wildland FFs have to wear PPE, they probably can’t fight fire in the same way. Cutting line with PPE is probably not possible. 14day shifts are also maybe not possible. That would mean (1) big changes in strategy away from suppression and (2) much higher costs.

Fuels reduction projects aren’t one-and-done—they’re an ongoing part of building wildfire-resilient communities. These efforts help firefighters by slowing fire spread and reducing intensity.

Lenya Quinn-Davidson wants to change how we think about fire—not as a threat but as a tool. “Fire is the most powerful tool we have as a species.”

two great articles on the value of home hardening (homes that won't ignite or be ripped apart in hurricanes) and zone 0 (wildfire safe gardens) and their relationship to insurance costs.

In a test, one home burns, the other is unscathed. A lesson for fire-proofing L.A.?
At a house-burning demonstration in Anaheim, one home survived, and one didn't. The results could provide a lessons for L.A. communities rebuilding after the January fires.

Q: Why does this model predict warming slow down due to ⬆️🔥 in boreal forests of Canada & Siberia?

A:Because more smoke 💨 (i.e., aerosols) will cool the lower atmosphere. But that’s assuming the landscapes stay the same (no shift from 🌲 to grasses).
