Bread and Circuses. It’s not a great one. I wouldn’t call it mandatory viewing.

He faked a warp drive malfunction so he wouldn’t have to rescue the ship. Got a commendation for original thinking and also got kicked out of the Academy. #TOSSatNight

Hodgkin must have been the production accountant. #TOSSatNight

Do you figure he knew Sgt Hooker?

I just finished the Mackenzie Calhoun opening four novellas. I didn’t like them as much as Rock and a Hard Place, but I like them very much. Peter David’s sense of humor was a treasure. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en...

It was a great year for the club! Thanks for all you do, Peter, and thanks to all who join in! Happy Holidays to us all! Surely, the best of times. #TrekBookClub

I think one reason why The Best of Both Worlds part 1 worked so well is that it ended with Riker giving the order to fire on Picard, making the tough call. We had the satisfaction of knowing that whatever happened afterward, the big question of the episode was answered. Riker DID it. #TrekBookClub

I was disappointed at the lack of a real climax and the lack of a rounded story. We did The Genesis Wave a while back and that book did a much better job at achieving resolution, even though they continued the story in subsequent books. #TrekBookClub

It was also kind of a pre-emptive surrender. As I understood it, the saucer with all the civilians was supposed to run away whenever the primary hull went into battle. Kinda totally missing the word “boldly” in the opening narration. Glad they junked the idea so quickly.

The Star Trek rules are pretty hazy on things like tracking warp signatures, so I guess this is a hand-wavy way to explain their devastating success. Would be better I think if they simply used a clever plan like the terrorists they are based on. #TrekBookClub

This was the most effective sequence of the book. Very violent though. Lots of torture. Didn’t really feel like Trek. #TrekBookClub

I’m not sure I ever understood saucer separation, let alone multi vector assault mode. 🤣 #TrekBookClub

But it didn’t matter because all of known space got “burned.” Discovery… arghh.

I’m realizing that there were too many different points of view in this book. Too many plot lines. It prevents us from really settling into one character’s perspective and experiencing their journey. This one hopped all over. #TrekBookClub

I kind of wish this section had hinted at that more. As it is, it’s kind of a superficial take on the fanatic mindset. Doesn’t tell us much we wouldn’t have guessed for ourselves. #TrekBookClub

I wish the book had given more focus to Jassat. His is the most interesting journey. He could have been the main character and I would have been happy. But the book is interested in being a typically plot-heavy, captain-centric novel first and foremost. #TrekBookClub

This element of the story is unfortunately true to human nature. I’m one of those idiots who thought we would eventually outgrow racism until its resurgence in recent years set me straight. Not all of us are racist, but some percentage of us probably always will be. #TrekBookClub
