I kind of want to look at the teachers and say, “I can’t fake this. I’m too tired to gather up that kind of energy!”

I even had kids over the years where I’d say, “Thursday! Thursday is going to be YOUR day!” I always giggled to myself but sure enough they were ready on Thursday!

It’s so true! And the key is genuine. I sometimes wonder if kids thinking I’m faking how excited I am to talk to them about their thinking. I actually never am. More! Tell me more!

For the particularly shy ones I warn them. I may say, “Today I’m going to make sure you have a chance to share your awesome math thinking with everyone.” It gives them a chance to pump themselves up because they know it’s coming. I’ll make eye contact in advance so they know it’s coming:)

When I’m talking to a student 1:1 I say, “Tell me about your mathematical thinking…” I use other prompts like, “Tell me more about…” Before asked questions to move forward learning I might say, “What I heard you say was…am I describing your thinking correctly?”

Or when they might even know it’s inaccurate because they struggled so much but you point out something they did well first, they believe they can do even more!

I love how when I show teachers a photo like this they ask, “How many can you see or how many are there? Are we counting the total or how many of each?”etc. When I don’t have a straight answer, and they find themselves counting both ways, I get - “I see what you did there.” 💚 images like this one.
