This painting is, of course, used on the 2003 Penguin classics printing of Frankenstein, which many viewers undoubtedly read either in high school or college. Del Toro is giving a nod to the source material in a way that shows he truly is familiar with it and the history of its adaptations.

Now that I have Frankenstein on the brain I'd like to point out an extremely small and easily missed detail in Del Toro's adaptation: at one point, Victor reprimands the creature, and the creature recoils in *almost exactly this pose.* The Wounded Philoctetes.
