Every December since 2017, I've delivered a keynote at Q2B Silicon Valley, commenting on recent progress in quantum computing. Here is what I said this time. It's been a good year for quantum.

Quantum computing in the second quantum century
On December 10, I gave a keynote address at the Q2B 2025 Conference in Silicon Valley. This is a transcript of my remarks. The slides I presented are here. The first century We are nearing the end …

"Due to the stochastic nature of this microscopic
engine, there are large fluctuations in its heat exchange,
including heat flowing the thermodynamically “wrong”
way".
Make an engine small enough and hot enough, and weird stuff happens.

The theoretical physicists Juan Maldacena and Ying Zhao helped create the “island formula,” a theoretical approach for exploring the interiors of black holes. When this method is applied to a whole universe, a puzzle emerges. www.quantamagazine.org/cosmic-parad...

Carlo Rovelli is always worth reading. But I find the framing of this piece questioning the need for "new physics" a little strange. I support the impulse to avoid fishing speculative new theories out of the air, but Carlo is using it here to support his own... /1

Why bad philosophy is stopping progress in physics
Theoretical physicists are in thrall to a misguided mindset that allows viable ideas to be advanced only by overturning what already exists.

In my latest piece for Foreign Affairs, I argue that the failure of the Smoot-Hawley tariffs of 1930 tell us nothing about how they would affect the US economy today.
