The real purpose of the Second Amendment is the right for states (as in Illinois, Oregon, etc.) to form a militia to defend their state.

When I was growing up, nearby farms would allow people to glean the potato fields after the mechanized harvesters had come through.

Gleaning would at least give people something to dry, can and freeze -- for free.
