Red-tailed or Turkestan shrike
Dunwich, Suffolk, 05/10/2025
It seems very settled. Hunting bees and storing them in a gorse bush larder.

Thanks.

Just seen pictures from the site showing “birders” standing up against its favoured bush where it was showing. Then claiming it is elusive!

Turkestan shrike
Dunwich, Suffolk 02/10/2025
My out for three shrikes week just went to four, when this Turkestan / red-tailed shrike was found, a short walk from Minsmere, where I was birding today.

Hi. Unfortunately not by me. It showed well in bare branches in the canopy of the copse about 10ft from me. But as I reached for the camera it flew. It was reported later in the afternoon by the pool, so others may have some. 🤞

Pied flycatcher
Southwold 25/09/2025
No sign of the two yellow-browed warblers, after a morning sea watch, but good to find a pied flycatcher in the same area.

We spent the rest of our final morning on Shetland y’day checking spots up the west side of Mainland, including the burn of Geosetter. Just a Blackcap seen on the way up, but coming back down this stunning Wood Warbler popped out!

The Blue-winged Teal at Hillwell y’day kicked off the final day of our 1st group to Shetland of the season. We were lucky as it flew in from the south with a group of Teal just as we arrived. Certainly a lot easier to pick out in flight than on the deck!

Taxonomy didn’t ruin the excitement for our Shetland group this morning when we stumbled on this absolutely stunning Hornemann’s Arctic Redpoll up at North Roe with the Isbister sparrow flock! Hopefully a sign that more will be on the way!

I was down to 1/50th of a second before the #bird moved away. Amazing how still they keep the head.

The more usual feeding behaviour. Still there today, but better in the morning, when it starts feeding - after which it can be elusive.

The #bird was fly catching this morning, showing superb aerobatic skills. Something I have never seen before from this species; only “clumsy” berry eating.

Zitting cisticola

I thought I was having a good day with an image of one of the juveniles from the 1st recorded breeding of Zitting cisticola in the UK. On review I found four juveniles and the adult female🤯
