Why for people invite you to get dinner, then wait until you're on the road to ask you to decide where you are going? You invited me, you're driving, I assumed you had a plan!

This week's mineral is what happens when you take an already magnesium rich carbonate and push it against a magnesium rich igneous rock! 🧪⚒️ #geology #mineral #mondaymineral

Its October, and I'm doing a series of videos for Spooky Saturday! Unfortunately this one is longer than I can upload here, but you can find it on YouTube. #geology #spookysaturday youtu.be/nM1a9cKpLUU

I'm more of a Requiem guy myself. But I'm down to Gangrel either way.

It's all fun and games until you're trying to invent calculus from first principles during an exam because it wasn't on the required course list! #science #geology #wednsdayword

It's the final round of Mineral Cup, and it's a heck of a matchup. The ever popular kyanite versus the newcomer tugtupite, both fascinating and culturally relevant in their own rights. Let's give them a big send off by going to mineralcup.org and voting today! #geology #mineral #MinCup25

Not looking forward to recording twice tonight, much less guessing which one to post!

Lots of them only find out by hearing it from the nurses when they go in. They're upset at capitalism and the constant cuts to services, but they're told their whole lives that its the fault of liberals. They will believe that to avoid cognitive dissonance until it effects them personally.

I think you radically misunderstand what I mean. I'm not saying that this will flip the Republicans over to becoming progressives, or even right wing Democrats. I'm saying that this can fracture the alliance between the Neoconservatives who have policy objectives and group of podcasters in office.

I live in a place with hospital serving six counties that is directly threatened by the Medicare cuts, and I see a lot of Republicans pissed enough to call out our Senators over it. It's not a "knockout punch" but it has changed the conversation enough that many are criticizing the censorship plans.

And I'm begging you to realize that politics has always been a matter of coalitions, public perceptions, and gaining or losing the cooperation of other people.

Many of the people who voted to undermine democracy care about healthcare. Most of the people who sat out the last election care about healthcare. The people already resisting think its past time to move on, but this isn't a play for their support. Its a play to collapse the base of the Republicans.

Both of these are optically impressive, but only one goes on to the final match. You can cast your vote for which at mineralcup.org today! #geology #mineral #MinCup25

Normally I apologize for the poor pronunciation of foreign words, but Canada still hasn't apologized for Justin Bieber so I'm calling it even. #science #geology #mineral #mondaymineral

there are almost certainly more people — more blue collar laborers, specifically — involved in the cultivation and production of chardonnay grapes and wine than in coal

Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Fox: "We're announcing today expanded programs to help the American coal industry. We're helping it because for years it has been under assault. It was out of fashion with the chardonnay set in San Francisco, Boulder, and NYC ... coal just makes the world go round."

You mean the one that was dedicated to making fun of poor people with health conditions?

This appears to be the full video of the Chicago delivery worker. It actually appears that an agent tries to assault him after he curses the Dear Leader Kim il Trump to their faces.

When you lived in a town where the only non-Walmart stores sold mattresses, guns, or liquor, it had the appeal of being the only place you were included. Even if it was a corporate hellscape, it was the only place you knew with children's stuff. Rural towns were rough for kids in the '00s.

Both of today's competitors are fan favorites that are familiar to freshman geology students. Both have uses in industry, and both tell us about how our world was shaped. But you can decide which one you want in the final match by voting at mineralcup.org today! #geology #mineral #MinCup25

Two green minerals with copper content, but only one slot in the next round. Does it go to the visible properties of dioptase, or the invisible hazards of cuprosklodowskite? You can help decide by voting at mineralcup.org today! #geology #mineral #MinCup25

I have been going around my region of the country this semester, giving a talk that opposes the incursion of commercial AI into higher ed. After one of them, my colleague sent me her students' reflections: these students are PRIMED to be supported in not having their educations hijacked for ill. 1/2

OpenAI's VP for education recently said the company wanted to become "core infrastructure" for schools and universities. Any infrastructure, though, always depends on habituating users to its technical affordances - so I've been trying to track how it's doing that 🧵 www.nytimes.com/2025/06/07/t...

It's structures vs optics in today's match. But there's also potential allies in the physicists and the anthropologists! Only one mineral can pass to the next round, so grab your friends and head to mineralcup.org to vote! #geology #mineral #MinCup25

I would like to take credit as brilliant, but I'm really just fortunate that others have done the work of collecting the knowledge in places I can find them. The creators of mindat.org did more for my knowledge of these facts than my own efforts ever could.

Mindat.org is the world's leading website about minerals and where they come from.
