I explain how the Trump administration is increasing "assaults" on its agents by engaging in racial profiling and illegal arrests of US citizens. If ICE cared about officer safety, it'd return to ICE policies that protected officers & Americans! www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnb...
Opinion | ICE blamed me for assaults on its agents — but its own polices are to blame
Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s targets don’t know why they’re being approached or what their rights are. The result is chaos.

"According to the Trump administration, ICE agents suffered about 90% fewer assaults under Biden than under Trump. Biden’s ICE better protected agents by adopting interior enforcement policies that reduced chaotic interactions with the public." msnbc.com/opinion/msnb...

MSNBC published my response to ICE's baseless claims about me. "I am more interested in ICE officer safety than ICE itself is. ICE cares more about running up the deportation numbers than protecting its officers." www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnb...

ICE is not only chasing down every random brown person in Chicago, they have a cameraman following them to film this for social media. Cruelty and inhumanity as content.

I believe in moral obligations, but US corporations effectively stopped existing as independent entities on Jan. 20, 2025 when the 1A was repealed and political retribution was legalized. bsky.app/profile/stra...

You don’t believe it’s Apple’s obligation to the country that created it to stand up to attacks on said country?
davidjbier.bsky.social
Correct, but I don't particularly blame Apple because all US corporations are effectively state-owned enterprises now, operating at the pleasure of our Dear Leader (who is totally not a socialist) bsky.app/profile/beeg...

“voters will side with the rule of law over authoritarian dictatorship—IF they are presented with this as a clear choice.” Too bad Democrats in leadership positions don’t want to fight authoritarianism

JB Pritzker and Gavin Newsom are doing something new and important: They understand Stephen Miller's theory of fascist power politics, and they've developed a theory on how to combat it. More Dems need to reckon with Miller's understanding of the moment.

Inside Stephen Miller’s Secret Plan to Normalize Trump’s Dictator Rule
He wants to supercharge searing civil tensions to get low-information voters to embrace their inner authoritarian. Exactly two Democrats appear to fully grasp this.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

Both correct interpretations as well.

This is a soulless attack on ourselves. Every one of his customers is a victim. Every person who worked for him. Not to mention his family and friends. Mass deportation isn’t us versus them. It’s us versus us.

Case I advised the victim on: If you’re wondering if ICE, CBP & Border Patrol ever make up evidence to frame people, here you go: www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2023/03/22/a...
The key piece of evidence in the case was the email that a high-ranking CBP branch chief in San Diego sent to Mexican immigration officials. The message was sent in December 2018, the month after the large group from Central America arrived in Tijuana.
The email, authored by Saro Oliveri, listed 24 people, including 14 U.S. citizens, whom Oliveri accused of being "organizers/instigators" of the so-called caravan. Written in Spanish, the email asked Mexican immigration officials to detain those people because CBP wanted to interview them and
"there exists a great possibility that they do not have adequate documentation to be in Mexico."
But last year in court, Oliveri testified that he made up the inadequate documentation claim without any basis.
"Literally, creative writing," he testified in August.

ICE is doing a hell of a lot of harm in the Chicago area *right now.* I don’t mean to trivialize the national guard stuff, it absolutely is an irresponsible escalation, but the guard-centric convo around this really does understate what’s going on without any guardsmen.

The White House is blatantly violating the Constitution, ignoring Congressionally-allocated spending. Approving any budget would put a stamp of approval on the end of checks and balances.

It'll hurt, yes, but it's time for opposition. The political costs will mostly fall on the people in charge.
Opinion | Democrats shouldn’t bail out Trump as the shutdown drags on
The best time for the opposition to take a stand, rather than settle for untrustworthy promises, is right now.
