I also wonder about something else—voters in OK (presumable) see more of their neighbors struggling than people in MA. Is it possible that being surrounded by poverty and poorly functioning institutions makes people reject progressive values?

This is so interesting. I just looked at voter turnout and Oklahoma had the lowest of any state—around 55%. Mass was in the middle. I wonder if the map would be significantly different if more people voted.
