Ah, happy memory of a formative and necessary experience as a politician at any level - being slightly misquoted out of context by the press 😆

I'm delighted to announce that I am....not the new Archbishop of Canterbury, despite 'rich hat priest follows mitre' being an anagram of my full name.

Beautiful map and much-loved old birding haunts. And speaking of ancestors the only one I know of with any money owned a shipyard in Lymington at the time this map was drawn. Now Berthon www.berthon.co.uk/about-bertho.... His sons were variously alcoholic or insane and certainly no money remains 😆
A Berthon History and Timeline from 1272 to the Present Day.
Berthon has been trading continuously since 1877, and occupies a riverside site mentioned in the Domesday Book.

Great Green Bush Cricket from a park in Potsdam earlier this month. Strikingly yellow legs on this individual

I'm sure we're not the first or last to do so, but some friends and I set this poem to music - must finish the recording sometime!

So glad it finally made it out of the planning maze! We went on one of the tours back in August, exciting to see the potential.

Exciting news that the Kennet Valley Wetland Reserve has finally been given the go-ahead. The ancient, but innovative, rural town of #Hungerford & its unique Town & Manor (that upholds commoners rights, keeps commons & open spaces for all) will be creating a new wildlife & community reserve 1/2

Yes, I always enjoyed this as a book title!

I enjoy what family history I know precisely because of the lack of fame and interesting selection of 'real' jobs that crop up! Bargemen, iron puddlers, cobblers, brickies, etc. I suppose I admit to feeling a sense of inherited nobility from those true nobles which I'm probably squandering ;-)

Saw a couple this summer but that was in the Cairngorms, so I was cheating!

Redpoll numbers are pretty shocking, was not on my radar. But anecdotally it occurs to me I very seldom see them now.

And rather than fight back Labour keep reverting to 'his ideas don't add up', essentially ceding the argument as though if a plausible way to do this were open to the Labour government they'd go right ahead. Not to much appeasing Farage as inviting him to take over.

But we did get there in the end and Lubeck is very lovely (with an unexpectedly diverting local natural history museum)

Turns out, German trains are indeed actually worse than ours which is pretty impressive. At least we usually get announcements on the train.

Nice! Here's one of a similar vintage in Berlin this evening. Nice Dunkel in an unfortunately very smoky bar with superb live jazz. Will be in Brussels one night on the way home on Sunday so interested in any tips for a watering hole near midi station!

What's the earliest we should be worried about a general election happening, and what slightly more sensible (if any are left by then) other countries might take in political refugees?

Kevin and the rest of us are looking forward to welcoming you!

Very excited to announce that I will be joining the staff at @uniofreading.bsky.social in the new year.

Especially looking forward to working alongside Kevin the Ichthyostega and the team at the @colezoology.bsky.social as part of my new role.
Picture of a smiling Ichthyostega called Kevin. He is a chonk.

I really like this paper, which models patterns and drivers of occupancy change across GB for 1252 insect species. Especially like Fig 5 which shows the most important negative and positive drivers for each grid square #conservationscience 🌍
www.nature.com/articles/s41...
The drivers are ordered by geographical coverage for which they are the key cause of increased predicted probability of presence (A) and decreased predicted probability of presence (B). The percentage values in the legend indicate the proportion of the map covered by each of the colours. For example, B shows that increases (↑) in the proportion of urban cover and decreases (↓) in the proportion of broadleaf forest are the first causes of degradation in 17% and 5% of the map respectively.

Glad you like it! Was pleased to have played a small role in the paper on the @carabidaeuk.bsky.social side.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at Ento25 this coming week @royentsoc.bsky.social. This memory popped up today, entomophagy at Ento15 in Dublin! As I recall the ants were quite piquant.
