Why does Trump think he's going to get away with jacking up health premiums on families by 75% in order to fund a giant tax cut for his billionaire pals?

Because he thinks his campaign to repress free speech will keep us quiet.

But he's wrong. We are fighting back.

This is out of hand. These agents are there to cause trouble and violence, not to keep people safe. These are the scenes that play out in war torn, destitute countries - not America.

Last week I did my first Reddit Ask Me Anything. It was great. Lots of candid questions about Democrats' priorities in this shutdown fight.

(also do not pay attention to the embarrassing range of super unhealthy drinks on my desk and focus on the substance pls)

This has nothing to do with crime. This is an attempt to crush political dissent.

Never before, in our entire 250 year history, has the military or immigration agents been used like this. It's dystopian, illegal, and it should stop.

When Democrats controlled the White House, Senate and House there were no shutdowns because we acted like adults and negotiated with Republicans.

Now Republicans control everything and they're refusing to even show up for work. Because they think the chaos of a shutdown is fun.

Good morning.

The government is shutdown and Republicans are hiding. They aren't even in Washington.

Why? Because Trump thinks he's king. He's told his sycophants to boycott budget talks so he can act lawlessly and steal people's health care to pay for his billionaire tax cut.

Her contempt is extraordinary.

Trump thinks he's a king. He believes he's accountable to no one. Not Congress. Not the American people.

And so when his people testify before the Senate, they act like they are bound by no rules and no laws.

DURBIN: You won't even say whether you talked to the WH about this?

BONDI: I'm not going to discuss any internal conversations with you

D: They're going to transfer TX Guard troops to the state of Illinois. What's the rationale?

B: I wish you loved Chicago as much as you hate President Trump

The fight to save our democracy - and the fight to refuse to vote for a budget that funds corruption, hands our government over to the billionaires, and kicks millions off their health care - is a righteous fight.

What's important is to understand the cumulative effect of it all. To not just see today's outrage.

See the silencing of Kimmel, the arrest of Comey, the harassment of Soros, the troops in our cities, the seizure of spending power, as all part of a plan to end our democracy.

This evening, President Trump is ordering 400 members of the Texas National Guard for deployments to Illinois, Oregon, and other locations within the United States. No officials from the federal government called me directly to discuss or coordinate.

Understand what they are doing: using the massive power of the state - including military power and the power to imprison - to carry out a campaign to eliminate their political opposition.

It's growing in seriousness by the hour.

This dystopian video is previewing a violent takeover, not a targeted law enforcement action. It's insane.

Trump is militarizing our cities to STOKE violence. Not to reduce it. These are the tried and true tactics of authoritarians - plain and simple.

These are the "law enforcement" tactics federal agents are using in Chicago. Their car is obstructed by a moped so they tear gas the entire neighborhood.

Unacceptable in America.

Hey I'm doing a Reddit AMA today at 3PM ET over at reddit.com/r/IAmA. Ready to answer your questions about the Trump shutdown. See you there.
chrismurphyct.bsky.social
This is simple. Congress should not willingly pay the bills to fund the most serious assault on political freedom in our lifetime - an assault that may collapse democracy as we know it if we don't fight back.
chrismurphyct.bsky.social
Republicans cheer and engineer shutdowns because shutdowns erode people's faith in government, and that benefits the corporations and billionaires who want to push government of the way, so they can amass more power and wealth.
chrismurphyct.bsky.social
The President gets no special new powers during a shutdown. He can't eliminate agencies. He can't use federal funds to punish his political opponents.

As Trump's illegality grows during the shutdown, Democrats' spines should stiffen to oppose his corruption.
chrismurphyct.bsky.social
Republicans have “demands” too - increase health care costs for Americans and fund Trump’s lawlessness.

Everyone should listen to Chris Murphy's extraordinary warning about Trump on our pod. First, he says the logic must be that the more lawless he gets, the stiffer the resistance.

"If I give in and consent to these kinds of tactics then it just normalizes it all." 1/

people are smarter than republicans think they are
chrismurphyct.bsky.social
No need to be scared of him. The trend is clear - everyone outside of his hard base is abandoning him.
chrismurphyct.bsky.social
Just naked and brazen corruption. All states represented by Democrats in the Senate.

Time to stiffen our spines and demand that we only fund a government that obeys the law.

Hey I'm going live on @instagram at @chrismurphyct now to explain why Trump has shut down the government (spoiler: it's because he thinks he's a king).

Join me and I'll answer your questions.

This is the dumbest poll question ever.

Try polling the question, "Should the Republicans shut down the government in order to make sure families' insurance premiums go up by 75%?"
