"Neither the Pope, nor any other worldly creature can no more be head of the whole Church, or a bishop over all, than he can be the bridegroom, the light, [etc...] For the privileges and names belong only to Christ, and be properly and only fit for him alone." - John Jewell ⚓️

The feast of the Holy Guardian Angels. A Eucharistic Prayer D sort of day.

"Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise." ⚓

I think of [enchantment] as reality clearly perceived. I think God enchanted things and it is for us to acknowledge the fact.

A blessed Michaelmas to everyone! Tonight at Ascension, Chicago we are pulling out all the stops and burning all the incense for our patronal feast. Procession & Solemn High Mass starts at 7 PM. ⚓

Yes, I found that to be so encouraging as well, such a word of hope. Prayers ascending as you prepare for your sermon and retreat!

Anyone who labors in the pulpit: this lecture from @jasonmicheli.bsky.social is an incredible theology of preaching that will renew your mind in the power of the Word. Take the time to listen to the whole thing. It will transform you. ⚓

Crazy that if you're in Chicago you can just stop in and see the folks that made vestments for the Pope. Truly wild times that we're living in.
Selfie of me with one of the owners of the House of Hansen. Exterior photo of House of Hansen Photo of Pope Leo wearing vestments made by House of Hansen.

Episcopalians! Anglicans! Friends! My latest explores how the Council of Nicaea reverberated into the English Reformation. Link in replies. ⚓

Oooo that looks very cool and breezy.

Honestly though. This is one of the reasons I was looking into it.

Yes, I'd seen RC tropical cassocks, but I wasn't aware of the OGS tropical habit! Interesting that there are these two precedents. You can know show up to your parish in the high heat of summer in a white cassock and say, "The Architect of the New Prayer Book has given me permission."

Little tidbit from the history of clerical garb:

H. Boone Porter—one of the architects of the 79 Prayer Book—recalls wearing a white cassock in India in the 1960s. This is from @livingchurch.bsky.social Aug 22, 1982.

Also, who knew Porter wanted to be a discalced Episcopalian? ⚓

Thank you! That is very helpful!

A very helpful thread on the 1979 Prayer Book revision process, and specifically its approach to Baptism and Confirmation.

Would you say a bit about why Prayer Book Studies 18 failed? What was it proposing?

I think we need to take seriously that creatures do bear witness to their creator, which has something to do with why we can get those feelings of transcendence in “nature” but that’s precisely not to collapse god into nature but to heighten other-than-human creatures ability to “pour forth praise”

Yes, he had some very good things to say. Obviously isn't going to have the same love of the Creed as an Episcopalian, but he did call it a kind of teacher that should empower our own theological work. And he gave a beautiful defense of freedom of conscience as well.

Yes, or at least there is this essay "Discernment Process," but maybe there is another one? In Discernment Process, the defunding is more asserted than backed up with data. www.thehourmag.com/volume-ii-is...

Yes, there is some very serious research to be done here. You point out some good places to look. Thank you! People just seem to talk about this defunding as if it is well-known or obvious, so I was sort of hopeful that someone had done a bit of this research already. I appreciate your help!

I will take whatever you have! From what I remember seeing on Reddit and Twitter, the story was pretty complex, with funding cuts at both the national church level and then also in diocesan budgets.
